Description
I recently switched from using Windows XP Pro 32bit SP3, where 2.4 was working fine on this machine, to Linux Mint 14 32bit Xfce. At first I tried running a backed-up folder of my original 2.4 install in Wine. That crashed every time with a distorted splash-screen, a second or two after the theme music kicked in. Next I installed 2.4-1~getdeb with all dependencies via the Software Manager. That crashes every time in an almost identical manner, not quite reaching the theme music kick-in.

I suspect that it could be a driver issue, but graphics seem to be working fine for everything else that I've tried, and nothing says 'error' in the log, so I'm stumped.
Steps to reproduce this issue
Start UFO: Alien Invasion, or start it in safe mode, or even start my backed-up Windows copy in Wine... sit and watch it fail. It all seems to crash in the same fashion for me at the moment in Mint.
