My default locale is Polish, but I wanted the game to be in English. Setting the option resulted in a mess with Polish and English captions mixed together.

This applies mainly to the weeapon captions, although some longer texts are also affected.

Which version of the game? And what exactly is "a mess with Polish and English captions mixed together"? What is english and what is polish? Some examples, please.

I'm not quite sure which version it was. It was the development SVN version as of August 13.

Most of the text was in English. Some captions were Polish. Very few descriptions were Polish. The system locale was Polish. The game locale was English.
An example: the plasma cannon caption is always in Polish and the description is always English. Try it yourself, it shouldn't be hard to change the current system locale.
Sorry, but i can't provide you with anything more accurate as the system with that glitch crashed today.

I have noticed this too (running SVN as of today).
When switching between the different languages and then back to English, some captions are still in Swedish (my locale).
This is among others the captions when selecting a single player mission (descriptions of the difficulty levels).

This bug is still exists in current trunk (r17990). As I see these texts - which are translated to locale - are come from scripts (for example campaign difficulty strings, laser weapon names for me). I have also realized that some in-game variables hold translated strings (like nation->name afair). So it should be about the initialization - parsing the scripts before init language.

For a solution: We should hold msgid strings everywhere and only translate when print out. This is not easy we should check all the code for this :(.

I've fixed locale glitches on
* campaign names
* item names
* fire definition names

I hope everything is fine now :)

ps. geoscape messages and mission names are the same as before. In the lang they were saved on, but that's another problem.
