Description
[http://sourceforge.net/p/ufoai/patches/533 Item 533] imported from sourceforge.net tracker on 2013-01-28 20:43:43

During my work with the models I realized that the skins have very low resolutions...
We have higher resolution skins for some of the models in our data_source.
We could easily upgrade some of the skins & quadruple their resolution.
IMHO we should do that.
To stay reasonable we should choose 256x256 pixel for the heads & 512x512 pixel for the bodies whenever this is easily possible (we only have a few of the high resolution source textures available)...
This would be a first step of improvement on this field. Other steps should follow soon afterwards...

Too high resolution, but nice & really sharp ;)

Male Body Skin 512x512

I started with this & hope that it is okay to upgrade resolutions for textures, where it is possible to do this in a relatively easy way (by using the originals, which are available from data_source & have high quality)...
I even chose 512x512 for the heads as this resolution will look very nice even @ high zoom (see attached screenshot)...
But I will use jpgs here, because the originals already had artifacts & were already compressed using jpg, so...
I am unsure what to do with gfx that are encoded using jpg but have much higher resolution than we need in-game - those could be saved as png also ?!
What do you think ?

as i've said - try to not use jpeg wherever possible

Roger.
Just using jpgs when only jpgs in target resolution (not higher) are available, because reconverting them to png will just increase filesize but not quality then...

Will close this as everything is clear regarding this issue.
