I suggest the following default mouse buttons' assignment:

left - select character or cancel selection (when
clicking on a blank area), fire bullet when aiming

right - when character selected, turn its face towards
the clicked direction, when aiming, cancel fire action,
if no character is selected, select the next character

This will also help where the middle mouse button is
not available, which can eventually be bound to another
less important action.
