This may be an old rehash of bugs 1542759,1539172 but whereas they specify explosions I get this for getting shot. The alien/soldier/civilian will suddenly keel over dead half a second before the shot reaches them. Have noticed mostly with plasma fire. Sorry I'm not fast enough to get a screenshot yet.
Am using a nVidia GT220 card with proprietary driver on Ubuntu 11.04 (i386)
version 2.4-dev IA-32 Aug 24 2011 Linux Debug
