Sound Staggers & Mouse Movement Is Slow
« on: September 16, 2006, 10:01:53 am »
Hello people,

I am an old x-com fan and I wanted to try your game. I have installed it. I also can run it, but when the UfoAI-Menu appreas, I hear staggering sound. I takes hours until a button click takes effect. Also mouse movement is slow (also like staggerin).
I read the system requirements. Actually I have better system than required: I have a FSC A 1640 Notebook. It has a Mobile Sempron 2800+ CPU, 512MB Ram (-32MB Shared Video) and so on. Maybe my VGA cannot handle it, but actually it is quake 2 engine, right? So it should work well.
I have Ubuntu 6.06 Linux. Details of my VGA is:
Quote

VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760/761 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter

As far as I know it has open gl support.
Anyway. What do you think?

Best regards from Germany

Hi again, I checked out Option-Menu. Well, I have only 6,5 FPS.
Any ideas "why" only 6,5?

Hi again!

Well, I have pushed down resolution and turned off image filter. I also gave 64MB to the VGA. Now I have 9fps on the menu. Sound plays well, now. The mouse still little sucks. You have forgotten to add a mouse sensibility bar. Please add it. BTW: How do I change mouse speed / sensibility in config file? What is the name of the var?

What do you think, why it is that slow? Is my sis-onboard vga that bad?
Do you have any idea, how I could boost up fps?

Hi,

now the game crashed. I started new game. There appeared 5 sentenses: Intro_Sentense1 ... Intro_Sentense5, black screen with music. I have pressed ESC. Suddenly there appeared the world view, but sound began to stagger egain. FPS was approx. 4 fps. After 10 seconds game crashed. In terminal there is following message printed:

Quote
Changing to Singleplayer
Global data loaded - size 5525840 bytes
Activate stage intro
...aircraft inited
Text has zero width (f_small)
SDL audio device shut down.
recursive shutdown
Error: ...could not generate font surface

What now?

the main problem is your shared memory graphic card

i will add the mouse bar to options menu

try to reduce the texture resolution - and set the display resolution to 640x480 or 1024x768

Textures are not the Problem. Switching down to LOW resolution cap AND setting screen resolution of 640x480 effects pure 4fps as I said. ;-(
So, I have no other choice then forget this game, right? :-(
Now I'll try quake 2 to check out performance. Maybe you should add a low system option to ufoai. On the other hand, I have no idea about the graphic structure of your modded quake 2 engine - so actually I cannot compare quake 2 with ufoai ;-)

... ON THE OTHER HAND ...
maybe that is the problem:
Code: [Select]
glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

I think my xorg is wrong configured.
