If an item is being researched, then you remove
everyone from it to free up the lab and try to add
scientists to another item, it shows 0 scientists on
the research, and won't add more.

A bit of debugging shows that this is sporadic and may just
be something not being initialised.
The first time I press the assign button it goes straight to
2 scientists allocated, and debug output shows that it was
apparently unable to allocate any.
Adding extra debug can make the problem go away.
I'll take another look at it tomorrow.

I can't reproduce this in current svn (except after maybe
starting a new game after assigning scientists to the
research item)

Just FYI: the assignment of scientists currently only works
correctly if you have only one lab (more will be ignored)
and you started a fresh game (i.e you started the game from
ground up).

We are working on a major overhaul of the saving/assigning
structure, so this will be fixed for sure. But it'll take
some time.

Ah well, no problem then, it is as you say happening after
saving and loading a game.
