This does appear to be a bug in the linux installer when
trying to run the game from the installer for the first
time. Indeed we have had reports the linux installer doesn't
properly create menu items or any type of shortcut to the game.

There is a work-around to get things working (if you haven't
uninstalled it yet) even after this error:

The best way it probably to create a shortcut launcher...
right click on your desktop, select "Create Launcher..."
then choose a name like "UFO:AI" and for the command use: sh
-c "cd /usr/local/games/ufoai && ./ufo" and then choose some
icon and hit done. double-clicking this launcher should run
the game!

Hmm.. I in my post below there is some really bad line-wrap

I don't know why it always wraps badly for me.
The desktop launcher command should just be one line:
sh -c "cd /usr/local/games/ufoai && ./ufo"

You might want to extend this to:
sh -c "cd /usr/local/games/ufoai && ./ufo +set
vid_fullscreen 0 +set vid_grabmouse 0"
to run the game in a window.

I'll try making a new launcher as you recommend, tho i'm
launching the game from command line and not using any menu
item.

**Edit**

I had completely forgotten that I had already
found a solution to this issue, it had actually
been an issue involving my graphics card.
Corg was set a 24bits. Upon changing to 16bits
I was able to launch the game. :)

Thank you again for your help tho, and sorry
for not updating this sooner.

Thanks for posting the update and the work-around you used.

I find it interesting that you had to set Xorg colour depth
from 24bit to 16bit to run the game.

For our reference can you provide a run down of your system
specs (Linux distribution, basic computer specs, graphics
card model, the graphics drivers you are using)? This might
help us narrow down potential bugs in our code or at least
help others with similar setups.

PS: I'm leaving this bug open since the original issue
reported appears to be a bug in the Linux installer. I'm
hopeful we will be moving to .deb and .rpm installers for
Linux soon, but I'm not sure if we will have these ready for
RC6...

not reproducable here - set this to pending - please test this with current trunk or 2.1 branch and reopen if this nasty bug is still alive...
