With the new ufo_textures update coming soon I want to introduce a new naming system for the ufo_tex folder:

There will be:

Screens: ufoS_00a0 - ufoS_99z15 tgas & ufoS_00a - ufoS_99z pngs
Displays: ufoD_00a0 - ufoD_99z15 tgas & ufoD_00a - ufoD_99z pngs
Buttons: ufoB_00a0 - ufoB_99z15 tgas & ufoB_00a - ufoB_99z pngs
Overlays: ufoO_00a0 - ufoO_99z15 tgas & ufoO_00a - ufoO_99z pngs

& other things I still have to find a name for ;)
This naming system will give the mappers the ability to program each texture individually via the material system ;)
So the typical screen inside the U.F.O. can play a animation overlay with speed of 8.0 & run the buttons below the screen with speed 12.0 & pulse them & have a green display on the right running with the speed of 20.0, all @ the same time. :)
This will give the mappers the flexibility to program all the animations played on a map individually & the same U.F.O. will always look different, on each map...

the filenames should be lowercase - i don't see why the texture name adds something new to the material system abilities? can you please enlighten me?

This is very old info & completely outdated already...
Of course filenames will be lowercase ;)
Small Update:
There will be a new subdirectory in textures called tex_ua containing all animation-frames & skins for the U.F.O.s.
Also there will be subfolders for Overlays, Skins, Displays, Buttons, Screens, Crash-Skins, Crash-Animations, etc. for easier navigation & orientation there...

Please test tropic.mat to see it in action, it seems I am not able to enlighten you otherwise ;)
