As seen in real world, weapons, airplanes and items may get multiple revisions as they are improved.

Allow ingame further research on already existing item to improve it.

Time needed for such research should be based on some sort of 'complexity' value which drops to lower as item gets older and new technologies in this item related tech tree were researched.

After improvement research is done create new item with Mk.XYZ where XYZ is revision number
(let say limit it to 3 (III))

From such research item may randomly gains 5-20%
(each item gets defined it's maximal values for improvement)
in several areas yet new model cost is higher than previous by 20-50%

examples
Improvement research of Aircraft Firebird may results into
- faster
- more fuel (let say may +10% total
- bigger cargo (let say max +10% total)
- more space for soldiers (let say max +2)

Improvement research of Human Bolter Rifle may results into
- improved accuracy
- faster reload
- lighter
- longer range
- higher damage
- support for bigger magazine > new research item

this whole idea enrich technology tree re-using already existing items or open doors for new research discoveries ...

yet not every item must support this ...
