In the original xcom series, any country that was unhappy with your progress or that had been successfully infiltrated by the aliens, stopped funding you. And in xcom3 some even went in the way of attacking you. I don't know if you intend to implement this, but I believe it would be a nice addition. And it would be great if sometimes you could count on some of the region's armies to support you in battle (some other team in combat besides you, the aliens and the civilians).

Furthermore, we could have the opposite, I mean having our team 'join' the aliens. This would be a last ditch attempt, as the player would have to do the aliens biding (capturing human test subjects, fighting off any incoming hostile forces from the attacked region, etc...) while trying to develop some means to effectively fight the threat. And it would provide the funding regions reason to distrust your operations.
The closest idea to this would be how in 'x-files', the group dealing with the aliens tried to buy time for developing a vaccine to save them, and so aided the alien cause for as long as it was necessary.

this is possible already - you can define which race to play in the singleplayer campaign. see the campaign definition in our wiki

the nation funding is also implemented in trunk (>=2.1)
