It would make sense to be able to purchase a medical
bay for the dropship. Maybe 1 or 2 squares in the
dropship where you could go to get soldiers healed.

No need to clutter the equipment of soldiers with bulky
medikits.
"Self-service" in the dropship, as opposed to service
by comrades.

Too late. We've already got a model and code for medikit. No
way we are going to trash it. :)

So, perhaps use medikits only for reviving unconcious and
clinically dead soldiers? Or for adding HP, but not for
curing wounds that drain HP round by round? Or the reverse?
Or just make the medical bay much more effective (but it's
not enouch; nobody will want to go the long way back to the
ship just the get cured faster).

No need to trash medikits. This would be an additional
service, I don't want _all_ my soldiers to have their
backpacks filled with medkits and surely there would be a
medikit aboard a military vessel, right? Would be very
handy if soldiers are nearby the dropship, no need to
waste supplies or have a soldier with a medikit trek all
the way back, etc.

If soldier health is kept from mission to mission, having a
medical bay in the dropship could heal some permanent damage
AFTER the mission. The idea behind this is that treatment
while in route to the hospital will not allow wounds to
deteriorate.

Another idea is that if for instance, after suffering 80%
damage soldiers become unconscious and start to lose health.
Medikit treatment would slow their death, just enough to
carry them to the dropship's med bay for stabilization.

Walking back to the ship to get healed would kill many soldiers with serious wounds imho.

Perhaps an upcoming "bug" related to this is:
Once the last alien is killed, does the game assume that all available medkits have been used to stabilize soldiers for the ride home? or do they die in transit because a medkit didn't get used to heal a soldier before the last alien was killed.
