...seems like the particles get calculated even if they are not even on screen, so there is much room for optimization.
I think too many calculations are done for the smoke particles or too many particles are generated.

I think we should add a low particle effect setting option or something like that. All i can say it runs fine on my machine (my hardware is almost 2 years old).
