The longer you play, the more model textures get cached and the more texture slots are used up, which eventually leads to a MAX_GL_TEXTURES hit.
A restart of the game or turning model caching off fixes that problem.

A limit for model caching would solve this problem.

Again this seems t be a 2part bugreport ;)

I guess MAX_GL_TEXTURES is history so the bug itself will not reappear.

But model caching still has no limit or does it ?
