When starting a new game, while placing the first base,
the message at the top of the worldmap shows
"01 Jan 0000, ..."

Thanks for following up with further details, they helped
immensely.

This bug should be fixed in trunk SVN as of revision 3873.

The problem turned out to be multiplayer setup code which
creates an aircraft (which in-turn sends a message to the
message queue with the incorrect date). When entering a new
campaign this errant message was being dislayed. The simple
fix I applied simply clears the message buffers on the start
of each new campaign.
