Black screen when starting a mission. This happens when
starting any map, but very rarely, "retry" clears the
problem completely, hence low Priority.

I had this same problem just now. Black screen, though the
hud (althud) was visible. In addition to that, after
clicking on an empty portrait, I got a segfault. It's most
likely not very useful, but here are the debug messages and
a backtrace. I also saved a core file with gdb's
generate-core-file command so if someone wants it or wants
to poke around with it, I can create you an account on my
system. the core file is around 570 megabytes so I might not
be keeping it for very long.

I've learned the workaround by Retry not always work. Hereby
I declare this bug to be the RC5 release stopper bug. Please
help!!!

Jiten (jkaartinen) spent many an hour debugging this and
found the issue and fix! Very excellent work. I applied a
patch to SVN trunk which implements this (rev 3435). Marking
this bug as done and dusted!
