Fixed by 42d9402e739bcd6542240adb6e35241b11066f08
That introduces a graphics flaw, though: flares shine through models. On the other hand, it is rarely a case with the default (top-down) view.

Should some flare-vs-model culling later, that will eliminate this new problem once and for all.
