Game: trunk rev 30059 windows
No exact recollection of said transfer, could have been any of a number them. Although the game crashed at the point of saving one unloadable save, 3 others were also corrupt. Sorry, didn't run gdb, actually the first time UFO:AI has crashed on me :P.
It shouldn't have anything to do with updating files, revision 30035 didn't load it either.

The bug seems to occur after Medium Alien Armor is found in battle. I found it odd that the research proposal popped right into mail, although the base that had the armor had no scientists. Maybe a bogus transfer is written in the save along with generating the mail?
If anyone needs the save that leads to the encounter/receiving Medium Alien Armor, how should I upload it? If i remove the existing attached file, will I be able to upload the newer in it's place?

Dammit, the uniformity of all the links and text confused me. I can indeed upload with great ease :)
Tried with rev 30035, generates the same bug. Seems that the existence of scientists in the base is irrelevant, saves become faulty before dropship reaches the base.
In the previous comment i just assumed that all research proposals are generated after the object reaches a base with scientists, as was the case with plasma weapons, alien astrogation etc.(disassembled the ufo in an industrial base, no scientists).

After some aimless playing, the saves work again. Apparently the bug can be bypassed by simply saving after some other transfer(s) have ocurred. Though I can't be sure, this is what IMO "fixed" the save, as transfers are only saved as long as they are in progress. Gonna test some more to make sure this is the cause of the miraculous autorepair.

The procedure to bypass the bug is to save after at least one transfer has completed after the battle where Medium Alien Armor first appears. Then the content of the transfer tags in the save file will be normal.

Could you upload a (not-corrupted) save with the mission on geoscape where Medium Alien Armor first appears?
Tip: The game does a quicksave before landing each mission, so if you get the save error after a battle quicksave can be good..

Ok, found it. Alien bodies sometimes(?) transfered from mission to home with transfer system (what is alienCargo of aircraft for then??). srcBase is NULL then.
Fixed in r30079 (trunk), r30081 (2.3).
