Contribution from Russian hard-rock
« on: July 14, 2008, 11:19:30 pm »
To leaders of the project.

Recently I've contacted with Andrey Bolshakov. Now he's a chief-editor of MusicBox e-zine, in past he was the music composer of most of songs of "Aria" rock-group. This group is well-known in Russia and counts about 20 years of famous history.

I've asked Andrey, if he will agree with inclusion of one of his songs into the game's OST (original soundtrack). The song discussed was the instrumental version of "Встань, страх преодолей!" - "Vstan', strakh preodolEy!" - "Get up and defeat your fears!".

Andrey agreed to contribute this song to the game's OST and waits for necessary instructions: he's new to CC-like licensing. Also I am.

I will prepare OGG preview file before 10:00GMT, but what should he do to release that song under CreativeCommons license? Should he sign some papers or his e-mailed words would be enough?

If he is willing to license it under the CC, that's enough. We will just indicate in our licensing info that it is licensed like that, and that's the end of it.

Check out LO-FI 48kbps preview of GUADYF48preview.ogg. It is the preview only, and it contains almost no author-related info.

Melody lenght about 4:20, size about 2Mib
Converted from 11Mib 320Kbps MP3
resulting 192kbps OGG is about 6.5Mib

I do really love the words from original song:

Get up and defeat your fears!
Stand up in full height of yours!
Stand, a human, firmly at your Earth
And reach the stars with your hand!

(translation is "by meaning", not "poetry-conserving")

You know, this is something that would really go well with air interceptions in my opinion, except it starts up too slowly for that. So I suppose it's better suited to tactical combat.

So I suppose it's better suited to tactical combat.
That was almost the same words I said to Andrey: "this track should be suitable for tactic episodes like Ahlen's "Dawn" does"

Anyway, it is up to core developers - where to put this melody.
Resulting OGG is also ready (converted using Roxio EMC 9), but I waiting last coments from Andrey and probable his version of the OGGtags. I think he may answer me tomorrow or a day after.

Should I left with 320Kbps or it is better to provide 192Kbps version?

Aw, dude! This is a great track alright - I don't care if it doesn't completely match the ambient style of the others already in the game - I gotta say that I'd love to see this in the project for something, even if it's saved for a special combat mission or something.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist such a comment!)  ;D

a great track
:-)
I have its original (with words) on 1987 or 1988 vinyl.

Rough translation:
(in Russian the phrase "who said (something)" in similar contexts means something like "who said this? he is really wrong! do not take his words in account")

Who said: the passion is dangerous or the kindness is laughable?
Who said: the bravery is unneeded thing in modern times?
As in older times, the wind may crush the wall,
But if you're strong, you may withstand a great storm.

Who said: single person - is not a warrior, not a valuable asset?
Who said: now is very different era?
The world is violent and unstable, wave after wave,
But if you're brave enough, the wave can't push you down.

(refrain)
Get up and defeat your fears!
Stand up in full height of yours,
Stand, human, firmly at your Earth
And reach to the stars with your hand!
(end of refrain)

Who said: live calmly (adventure-less, too cautiously), do not seek for your Golden Fleece?
Who said: do not try to fly high or to dive deep?
A steel (weaponry) is not a heaviest weight you may carry, and the Fortune loves to change itself.
I'll pay no more than one pfenning for one, who just dreaming while sitting near a window.

(refrain)

Who said: the struggle is futile and the evil is stronger than the good?
Who said: save your ass, here is foxhole for you?
Your way is hard, but its target is as beautyful as the flame of campfire (in the night).
Human! It is your hour! Go!

(refrain)

Well, we achieved final agreement with Andrey regarding OGGtags.
Within 10-12 hours the resulting OGG will be uploaded.

BTW, where should I upload it? I think, the RS is not suitable place to deliver project's parts.

Rapidshare isn't a great hosting method for all sorts of reasons, but if you have nothing else it's better than nothing. Alternatively you can email it to one of the dev team.

If it's 11MB in size, be aware that not all email services can take an attachment that size.  Some limit to 10, others 20 or other amounts, my personal email for my website takes 20MB sized attachments, although I'd imagine that at least one of the devs has an account that can take 11MB.  If by rare chance you still have difficulty, my website hosting offers creating folders where others can have FTP upload permissions, for just about any size, but I'd be surprised if resorting to that became necessary.

@Mattn: If I recall right, don't you have some kind of Google mail account?  I'm pretty sure those can take 20MB attachments, if memory serves.

Because I'm an e-mail server admin in our organization, I do know this problem very well. My server have limit of 15Mib per message.

But there are at least 2 workarounds:

1. multi-volume archives offered by most of modern archives (Hello, mr. Robert Jung! Your famous ARJ was the first archiver with volumes support AFAIK.) Each volume may occupy separate message.

2. Multipart messages. I do not know if Mozilla Thunderbird (I use @home) supports such RFC, but TheBat! e-mail client we using @work does this just perfectly.

Would PHALANX HQ consider it is as reliable base, I can upload that file to your site.

Or... hmm... I have GooglePages account and even small web/wap site with weather infos for different cities ono my interest. They offer 100Mib for storing pages and files. So, it is not a problem to U/L the file somehere.

Also I have sourceforge login (created specially for voting for UFO:AI), but I don't know if it gives me permission to upload something into project's file storage.

(sorry, could not resist such comment  ;D )

Yes, at the beginning (when the maildrop size was lesser than 2Gib) maximal message size was 10Mib, but later it grew upto 20Mib.

can you host it anywhere where i can find the download link - or even understand one word on the page? downloading doesn't work.
