Title: Ufo: TTS - New Ufo remake
Post by: misiek on April 27, 2009, 07:22:03 pm
This time it's more faithful remake, it even uses graphics from original game.

Here's project page:

Looks nearly Identical to the Original.  Not sure what Improvements he can work with there.

Also looks like its a 1 man band.  He's going to need a larger development team if he's looking to create anything worthy.

misiek,

Looks like indeed a faithful remake. All the best! I wont mind being your beta tester once an Alpha or beta version is out ..... :)

Unfortunately, it wont be open source..... awwwwwwwww... btw, wat programming r u using? Java based?

Oh, I wouldn't say that. Since he's basically aiming to take the original game and improve on it, he doesn't have to create graphics or build a game concept. All he has to do is code a new engine with new features, and maybe do some extra menus. If he's skilled and motivated enough, he should be able to pull it off on his own.

Hello,

I'm not the author, i'm just a messenger ;)

As for your question - he is using c++ and direct X.

About open sourcing - i've tried to convince him on project xenocide forum, but without any luck. Maybe you people would like to try ;) Or maybe we should wait until he will change his mind.

As for this project, i think it's quite interesting. Honestly i waited for such project for long time. UFO: AI is great, but it would still be interesting to play original ufo on new engine, with higher resolution (like in ufo2000), with some new cool additions.

There are many projects with engine reimplementations, like open transport tycoon for ttd, exult for ultima, fheroes2 for homm2, and far far more. It would be nice if someone could make such project for ufo.

I also have another idea. Maybe some of you guys with high diplomacy skill could contact pocket ufo team and ask them for source code. AFAIK they reimplemented whole game. Such project could be converted into full pc port, taking advantages of higher resolution, pc mouse etc.

Nods nods. I perfectly understand.

Not mani ppl are crazy gamers like me. lol. I practically tried tracking at least 5 diff x-com like proj:
X-Force, Proj Xenocide, Cydonia's fall, UFO2000 (the one for multiplayer capability), and this UFOAI.

But unfortunately, most drop off and the onli ones playable are Xforce and this UFOAI. And of course UFO2000 for those mplayer which i am not really into or interested.

A multiplayer "remake" (I quote since it doesn't remake the single player game) of the original UFO.

Um... doesn't this sound an awful lot like a game that has already been done and is Free Software?

http://ufo2000.sourceforge.net/

That is all.

A multiplayer "remake" (I quote since it doesn't remake the single player game) of the original UFO.

The plan is that it will be multiplayer/singleplayer remake.

Um... doesn't this sound an awful lot like a game that has already been done and is Free Software?

http://ufo2000.sourceforge.net/

That is all.

No, ufo2000 is only about battles . This game will also provide multiplayer game for strategic part (if i understand it correctly).

It's kinda sad that author don't want to open source it. This could become something like openttd for ttd. But it's author choice, we can't expect that every game author will open source his games (however it would be great). If you want, you could try to convince him. I tried, but i'm not good open source advocate.

As for public release. There may be a release at end of may/beggining of june.

As for your question - he is using c++ and direct X.

Sadly, as far as I know, this means x86 and Microsoft Windows only.

No x86 Mac native.
No x86 Linux native.
No PPC Mac at all.
No PPC Linux at all.

Yes, I know about Wine and Emulators. That's ok (only; not good, not great, just ok) for x86 hardware.

Oh well. I run XCom 1 in qemu on my G4 mac. (Dos version :-)

Hello guys.

Do you want to see how battlescape looks with remade tiles for desert terrain?

As you see, viewport is much larger, while tiles also are in higher resolution.

Unit tiles in screenshot are original, but they will also be remade (like every other tile).

Hello,

Thanks to new graphic artist, game is getting new remade tiles. He already remade tiles for sectoid, ufo, barn and cultivat.
Here are comparison screenshots, one with new old tiles, one with new (both versions feature new gui):

(it's best to see those screenshots full size so open them if new tab, if they are scaled)

All words said by me is MY opinion, otherwise I add links to source. And it should be common practice, should not?

It will not be interested for all non-english-speakers, for example, or you have other opinion?

And, I said all what I wanted to said already.

Yeah, it's your opinion, but it felt like you want to say that it won't be interesting for all people.

It's understandable that you have reasons why it isn't interesting for you, but i hope that it will be interesting for other people.

It will not be interested for all non-english-speakers, for example, or you have other opinion?

Yeah, probably. But on the other side i think that this project will only be interesting for players who played original x-com and i think that those players have basic understanding of english language - original game was in english after all (or am i wrong?).
Title: Re: New Ufo remake
Post by: Destructavator on February 25, 2010, 06:55:55 pm
Yeah, it's your opinion, but it felt like you want to say that it won't be interesting for all people.

Please keep in mind that a good number of forum members here don't know English as their first language, and as such attempting to "read between the lines" when reading their posts may pick up an unintentionally implied message.

...original game was in english after all (or am i wrong?).

As I recall the original game was in English, French, and German, as some versions had a language menu when the game was started.  There might have also been Spanish, but its been a long time.

hehe - of course

it's still a pity that it isn't portable - as it would really be cool to play such a game on my handheld

but i'm sure you will attract enough players as the game looks great and it looks like you catches "the spirit of xcom" (tm) ;)

also the point that you have full campaign multiplayer is very cool. that's something we can only dream of in ufo:ai :(

all the best wishes for the release

Fortunately, there was a "kind man from Tula (RU)", who hacked X-Com 1 and created excellent translation to Russian. So there are many X-Com fans in Ru-speaking net, and I know some opinions from our forum about this remake.

> It's understandable that you have reasons why it isn't interesting for you, but i hope that it will be interesting for other people
It is really interesting for me, really. but not as much as it can be.

And good luck for you and game, in any case it will find its fans too. $)

Extractor is written in java. This program is responsible for extracting data (and save them in more friendly formats) from original ufo game.

and this can't be ported over to c or c++ (or whatever your game is written in?) - installing java to run a game that is not using java is a little bit strange imo.

i hope you don't get our feedback wrong ;)

Yeah, maybe someone will do it. It was just faster to use java for it.

Maybe in final version extractor won't be needed at all - if all graphics will be replaced by new one.
