Looks nearly Identical to the Original. Not sure what Improvements he can work with there.
Also looks like its a 1 man band. He's going to need a larger development team if he's looking to create anything worthy.

misiek,
Looks like indeed a faithful remake. All the best! I wont mind being your beta tester once an Alpha or beta version is out ..... :)
Unfortunately, it wont be open source..... awwwwwwwww... btw, wat programming r u using? Java based?

Oh, I wouldn't say that. Since he's basically aiming to take the original game and improve on it, he doesn't have to create graphics or build a game concept. All he has to do is code a new engine with new features, and maybe do some extra menus. If he's skilled and motivated enough, he should be able to pull it off on his own.

Hello,
I'm not the author, i'm just a messenger ;)
As for your question - he is using c++ and direct X.
About open sourcing - i've tried to convince him on project xenocide forum, but without any luck. Maybe you people would like to try ;) Or maybe we should wait until he will change his mind.
As for this project, i think it's quite interesting. Honestly i waited for such project for long time. UFO: AI is great, but it would still be interesting to play original ufo on new engine, with higher resolution (like in ufo2000), with some new cool additions.
There are many projects with engine reimplementations, like open transport tycoon for ttd, exult for ultima, fheroes2 for homm2, and far far more. It would be nice if someone could make such project for ufo.
I also have another idea. Maybe some of you guys with high diplomacy skill could contact pocket ufo team and ask them for source code. AFAIK they reimplemented whole game. Such project could be converted into full pc port, taking advantages of higher resolution, pc mouse etc.

I assume you already know about Cydonia's fall (http://ufo.yaa.dk/)?

Sure, i know. Unfortunately looks kinda vaporware :(
-

Eh BTAxis,
I thought this project was abandoned about 1/2 year ago? They have not a single updates i thnk for close to a year now...
-
I don't really follow the other projects, so I don't know about things like that.
-
I don't really follow the other projects, so I don't know about things like that.
Nods nods. I perfectly understand.
Not mani ppl are crazy gamers like me. lol. I practically tried tracking at least 5 diff x-com like proj:
X-Force, Proj Xenocide, Cydonia's fall, UFO2000 (the one for multiplayer capability), and this UFOAI.
But unfortunately, most drop off and the onli ones playable are Xforce and this UFOAI. And of course UFO2000 for those mplayer which i am not really into or interested.
-
A multiplayer "remake" (I quote since it doesn't remake the single player game) of the original UFO.
Um... doesn't this sound an awful lot like a game that has already been done and is Free Software?
http://ufo2000.sourceforge.net/
That is all.

The plan is that it will be multiplayer/singleplayer remake.

No, ufo2000 is only about battles . This game will also provide multiplayer game for strategic part (if i understand it correctly).
It's kinda sad that author don't want to open source it. This could become something like openttd for ttd. But it's author choice, we can't expect that every game author will open source his games (however it would be great). If you want, you could try to convince him. I tried, but i'm not good open source advocate.
As for public release. There may be a release at end of may/beggining of june.

Sadly, as far as I know, this means x86 and Microsoft Windows only.
No x86 Mac native.
No x86 Linux native.
No PPC Mac at all.
No PPC Linux at all.
Yes, I know about Wine and Emulators. That's ok (only; not good, not great, just ok) for x86 hardware.
Oh well. I run XCom 1 in qemu on my G4 mac. (Dos version :-)

Hello,
Author has released first demo version. It's in download section on his page.

Ooooo.... interesting.
A lil offtopic here;
For those who seen my x-force mention, they have also a new 28' June 09 0.915 multilingual release.....
-
Hello,
Author of this project has released a beta version, with multiplayer support.
If you are interested, go here:
http://nefurii.my-place.us/
Please remember, that this game requires data from original ufo enemy uknown (you have to extract graphics manually, details are included in instruction.txt).
-
At least from my point of view the other projects have a strike against them in my book - no Mac ports.

OOo.... if u dunnoe already, macs are uber hard to program / create applications, considering how little development tools they have..... :(

XCode + Macports is pretty good.

Hello,
This project has gone from one man project to team based. Also it has new website:
http://ufotts.ninex.info/
New screenshot from alien base:
Also some models of craft armaments:
You can see more models on main site.
-
nice to hear that project is alive :-)
-
I am also happy to see that fans of X-com is not died.
I also enjoy more projects to revive this legend
-
Hello guys.
Do you want to see how battlescape looks with remade tiles for desert terrain?
As you see, viewport is much larger, while tiles also are in higher resolution.
Unit tiles in screenshot are original, but they will also be remade (like every other tile).
-
This project needs help with graphics. If you can (and want to) help, register on forum and/or join ufotts irc channel (details here http://ufotts.ninex.info/index.php/irc/ ). If you don't have graphic talent, maybe you know someone who has.
-
Hello,
Thanks to new graphic artist, game is getting new remade tiles. He already remade tiles for sectoid, ufo, barn and cultivat.
Here are comparison screenshots, one with new old tiles, one with new (both versions feature new gui):
(it's best to see those screenshots full size so open them if new tab, if they are scaled)

very nice job - will it have multiplayer, too?
-
very nice job - will it have multiplayer, too?
Yep, it already has. But it has multiplayer mode for whole campaign, not only battles (like ufo2000).
-
I dont really like the alien tiles. there bodys are a bit to thick- just my opinion - but altogether it's really promising :D
Honestly, really COOL! :)
-
I wish I could help out with this myself, but I'm already working on enough other projects I just don't have time - I wish you good luck with making it though.
-
Hello,
Demo version will be released this sunday.
-
will there be a linux version, too?
-
will there be a linux version, too?
Sorry, no. It's windows only. But maybe it will work under wine.
-
that's a pity - so no option for me - i hate fiddling with wine ;)
-
You can't play other games :P You need time to develop Ufo: Ai :P
Joking of course ;) I hope you will manage to release 2.3 this year - so 2010 will be interesting year for x-com fans.
-
That game is not interesting at all. It is not opensource, it doesn`t support localization and even works only under win32.
-
That game is not interesting at all. It is not opensource, it doesn`t support localization and even works only under win32.
i think what you wanted to say is, that it isnt interesting for YOU...
-
All words said by me is MY opinion, otherwise I add links to source. And it should be common practice, should not?
It will not be interested for all non-english-speakers, for example, or you have other opinion?
And, I said all what I wanted to said already.
-
All words said by me is MY opinion, otherwise I add links to source. And it should be common practice, should not?
Yeah, it's your opinion, but it felt like you want to say that it won't be interesting for all people.
It's understandable that you have reasons why it isn't interesting for you, but i hope that it will be interesting for other people.
It will not be interested for all non-english-speakers, for example, or you have other opinion?
Yeah, probably. But on the other side i think that this project will only be interesting for players who played original x-com and i think that those players have basic understanding of english language - original game was in english after all (or am i wrong?).
-
Yeah, it's your opinion, but it felt like you want to say that it won't be interesting for all people.
Please keep in mind that a good number of forum members here don't know English as their first language, and as such attempting to "read between the lines" when reading their posts may pick up an unintentionally implied message.
...original game was in english after all (or am i wrong?).
As I recall the original game was in English, French, and German, as some versions had a language menu when the game was started. There might have also been Spanish, but its been a long time.
-
You can't play other games :P You need time to develop Ufo: Ai :P
hehe - of course
it's still a pity that it isn't portable - as it would really be cool to play such a game on my handheld
but i'm sure you will attract enough players as the game looks great and it looks like you catches "the spirit of xcom" (tm) ;)
also the point that you have full campaign multiplayer is very cool. that's something we can only dream of in ufo:ai :(
all the best wishes for the release
-
it's still a pity that it isn't portable - as it would really be cool to play such a game on my handheld
What handheld? Maybe someone ported dosbox to it ;) Or maybe you could try pocket ufo if it's based on windows mobile. Also AFAIK someone managed to dissasemble and assemble ufo for gp2x.
-
Fortunately, there was a "kind man from Tula (RU)", who hacked X-Com 1 and created excellent translation to Russian. So there are many X-Com fans in Ru-speaking net, and I know some opinions from our forum about this remake.
> It's understandable that you have reasons why it isn't interesting for you, but i hope that it will be interesting for other people
It is really interesting for me, really. but not as much as it can be.
And good luck for you and game, in any case it will find its fans too. $)

And it cannot be installed without Java. Another thumb down...

hm? it's java - i thought it isn't cross plattform?!

Only the installer uses Java if I got it correctly.

Extractor is written in java. This program is responsible for extracting data (and save them in more friendly formats) from original ufo game.
-
and this can't be ported over to c or c++ (or whatever your game is written in?) - installing java to run a game that is not using java is a little bit strange imo.
i hope you don't get our feedback wrong ;)
-
Yeah, maybe someone will do it. It was just faster to use java for it.
Maybe in final version extractor won't be needed at all - if all graphics will be replaced by new one.

nice - a huge step compared to the old shots. release the code and the media under some open source license so we could get this into the linux distris please ;)
-
Looking good :) Only thing I can nag about is that your artist decided to put dollar signs into the food stands at that terror mission. I doubt that's a good idea, since the tiles are probably supposed to be used for terror missions all over the world and not only on US territory, no? ;)
-
Wow, really nice graphics :o
I hope you guys wont stop working on that. Really NICE!
-
But ... But ... I'm PPC Mac, I can't use wine.
Whine.

This saturday (10 July) Ufo: tts will releae public beta version. It still won't be finishable to the end, but it should be quite enjoyable.
