forgive me if there is already a thread about this,
but are there plans to do the earth view in 3D like the old ufo games, and, well, like google earth, etc?
would be much better in visual and , more important, look and feel ways, so that the player actually "feels" the planet, he / she is defending.

yes - the plans are there - but currently we have noone that started this topic - there is already some code to start with - just search for map3d, globe and so on in our codebase.

I have received permission from Axel Mellinger to use a 2400x1200 rectangular projection version of his All-Sky Milky Way Panorama, for the background of the Geoscape.
He asks that his name be added to the list of credits.

Where should I send it?

It would be cool to use the Blue Marble monthly images.
On the front page for Blue Marble it says: “Anyone using or republishing Blue Marble: Next Generation please credit “NASA’s Earth Observatory.””
In the MP Photo Guidelines it says: “NASA still images, audio files and video generally are not copyrighted”.

Just a though, you've got some gorgeous night-sky and geographic overlays for the map... maybe some other optional overlays would be available? Like a political map, for example. For kicks or for actual gameplay (there's another similar game on SourceForge that has national concerns, it adds a little something).

Potential Overlays

Political Map
Alien Missions in the last 6 months
Alien Activity(Be it mission or aircraft flying over or sightings) in the last 6 months
Radar Coverage(Or just make that allways on in a circle around your base & radar towers)
Missile Coverage(or as above, a different colour circle allways on)
Cities

I see a 3d globe is now being worked on.
I tried to Upload the All-Sky Milky Way Panorama on SourceForge but it was to big.
So if you would like it, Where should I send it?
