FreeBSD port v.2.3.1 Error: Shutdown on start

Hi everybody,

I played X-COM UFO Defense on PS1 and was overjoyed to find this game in ports.

The version is 2.3.1 and it complied without any apparent problems but I get a flash of a blank screen and the following errors on start:

I checked out /usr/local/lib/ufoai/ufo and it's an executable.

I really looking forward to playing again and would appreciate it greatly of someone could provide some assistance in getting this error resolved so I cold do so.

The PS1 game was hard to come by and I don't have it anymore. :(

You should search for better video driver with more hardware support. For now try to disable shaders in config file.

Err... May be you have not that config file to edit yet, but there should be the one as example on forum somewhere.

My video card is an old NV20 GeForce3 and all it will run is the nv generic driver, that or the VESA driver. I see where the game is using the x11 driver and will see if I can come up with the config file to utilize it.

My box is a Dell w/ a 2.8GHz P4 and 3GB RAM running FreeBSD 9.0. This is really the first game I've tried playing on it.

Your hardware is enough to play UFO:AI. Problem is game trying to use shaders what isn't supported. So you have to disable them. Another choice - get 2.4 version, it can detect such situation.

you are not using the hardware, but the software renderer:

try glxinfo or something like that to get a more detailed output. Direct rendering must be yes, until this isn't the case, you can't run ufoai

I ran glxinfo and it came back as command not found.

I have a laptop running FreeBSD that has a better video card and it did accept the command and return results so it's not an OS related thing. I may try running it on that.

I'll see what I can come up with as far as changing it to hardware rendering but think I'm going to have to get a new video card before I'm going to be able to do much with it. It's been sitting in someone else's basement for a few years and is one that I rebuilt.

I usually don't play computer games, I'm more into console gaming, but recently got a nice 20" LED monitor for it and wanted to see what it could do.

Probably your videocard has some 3D just the driver u use don't. It may worth checking for better drivers (eg. for older NVIDIA cards the closed source driver is needed on Linux either, the OSS one hs no hw 3d acceleration)

I thought  it would have 3D and expected more out of it. It's a GeForce3 and I've used a GeForce2 to play Unreal on a Windows box that only had a P3 and 512MB RAM. I installed OpenArena and Warzone2100 last night and they both were too choppy and slow to play. If I'm going to play games at all on it I'm probably going to have to get a new card to do it, unless I'm missing something.

The generic nv driver is the only one I've been able to get to work with this card. The times I've tried using the current Nvidia driver I've ended up with a blank screen and have had to go in thorough the terminal and specify the generic driver in my xorg file to fix it. This is a fresh build of FreeBSD though so it won't hurt to give it another try. I've still got my old GeForce2 card too and may even give that a try while I'm at it.

I've tried the Vesa driver before and it did give me some transparency effects but it won't give me 1600x900 resolution.

GF3 is good enough for UFO:AI AFAIK. it's the driver issue then.

You're right, it is the driver.

I went though the whole dance of installing the current Nvidia driver, the ports it takes to configure/use it, and enabled the Nivdia module to load at boot but still got a fatal error when trying to startx from my login screen. I had to go back to using the generic nv driver to get X to work at all but after fiddling around with it for a while have made some progress. When running dmesg I'm now getting this message for the first time:

NVRM: The NVIDIA GeForce3 GPU installed in this system is
NVRM:  supported through the NVIDIA 96.43.xx Legacy drivers. Please
NVRM:  visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for more
NVRM:  information.  The 295.49 NVIDIA driver will ignore
NVRM:  this GPU.  Continuing probe...

I'm also getting a message at shutdown about the GLX module not being loaded due to an incompatible driver.

I downloaded the FreeBSD-x86-96.43.20 driver for it but am going to go ahead and see if I can't get an new Nvidia card for it today. The box itself didn't cost me anything, all I've got in it so far out of pocket is what I've spent on RAM for it. The video card was already in it and the rest was hardware I had from older computers.

And I do want to play this game, more than ever now. :)

I got the game to start. :)

I wasn't able to get a new video card with the AGP connectors I needed but took the GeForce3 card out, blew out the fan cage vents (that were almost completely clogged with dust), and discovered there was already a port I could compile with the legacy Nvidia driver I needed for this card.

I haven't started a game yet but messed with the options and tutorials a bit. It looks I might be able to run it at full screen 1600x900 resolution, though I haven't tried doing so yet. I'm worn out now and will give it a try later and report back how things are going so you'll know how it runs under FreeBSD.

I did get to kill the alien boss eye thingy, or whatever it was in the PS1 version of X-COM UFO Defense, but win or lose at least I got my video card problems sorted out. :)

Thats not good, really. You have to make sure your hardware is mostly clean from dust - i clean the interior every half of a year. Dust is in the most cases responsible for broken hardware. There also protective nets available for the case coolers which i really can recommend. If youre not sure how to clean it properly - google it. :)

I agree. It's a wonder it hadn't overheated.

This computer used to belong to my niece and was given to me a few months ago after sitting in her dad's basement for several years. It didn't have a HD in it when I got it, taking it out and destroying it was his idea of computer security, and I replaced that and a few other hardware items with parts I had from old machines. The video card was already in it and I hadn't noticed the fan cage vents were clogged with dust till I took it out and looked at it. I had blown it out with canned air but must have missed that part.

I played a short (I died before long) skirmish game this morning to see how it ran and was able to run it full screen at 1600x900 resolution without any problems. It looked to be running at a frame rate of between 50 and 70 fps, I couldn't really tell it was going so fast, but what little part of the game I did play did so smoothly.

It plays differently than X-COM UFO Defense and I didn't know what I was doing at first as far as commands but looks like it will be a lot of fun once I get the hang of it.
