Have you considered that they might just do this only because it's fun? Some do it just because they love coding. Others do it because they might be recognized by other programers for their efforts.
Others are helping just because the game is Free Software. Many people hold freedom to be above all else. I am one of them.
I can do what I want with this game, I just have to adhere to the licence conditions. I am even legally allowed to sell the game for a million US dollars, if anyone where stupid enough to buy from me.
