Alien Missions
« on: June 15, 2009, 11:13:49 pm »
This suggestion is for after Advanced Radar is implemented.

After researching Advanced Radar, selecting an researched UFO should show not only its type and speed, but also its mission (recognition, retaliation, supply, alien base, terror, etc) like on old X-COM. This feature would add some tatical options for the player (like deciding intercepting priority for example).

This way, Advanced radar wouldn't just be a radar with larger range (this would be pretty disapointing).

But Advanced Radar supposed to be a radar, no? Not a big "mind scanner" as Hyper-wave decoder in X-COM. From how a radar could know what mission a UFO is on?

Well, since I've seen no plann to make a Hyper-wave decoder on UFO AI design, I simply suggest to merge it with the adv. radar. Easy to give a good explanation for it on the adv. radar research text. Or even an separate research for it. Maybe it could work only withing advanced radar range (with option to upgrade offbase radar instalations as well).

To be honest I dont like the idea as such, when I read radar I just cannot understand why we can suddenly understand the alien's mission.

If there would be some tech research, like i dont know... "Alien computer technology" or "Alien transmission technology", or something like that, to decode what type of transmission the aliens know, would be used, then I think I would not be that opposed to this, but even an "advanced radar" strikes me as very odd to find out what mission type an alien ship goes to...

Perhaps the UFO creators thought that this feature would be nice to have for game-play reasons. It just strikes me a bit illogical :/

Well, improving gameplay is always the idea here. Logical explanations can always be arranged on the research report for plot sake.

True, but merging Adv radar and HW-D doesnt sound like an imporvement. However, Alien Transmission sounds like an awsome research pre-requisite for an improved adv radar. Perhaps we could call it Alien Interception Radar, or AIR for short.

Good Idea, but that would give more work for the coders. lol
I liked it though.

Ah, but this would be very handy indeed. Maybe set it aside for 2.4?
