2nd Air Combat Soundtrack Idea
« on: July 02, 2008, 05:47:25 pm »

This is a fragment of another musical idea I have for air combat music, and since it's a different tune of a different style I thought I'd place it in a new thread.

This one was started with the idea of a menacing, yet atmospheric theme, the idea of flying high above the clouds to engage an unknown, deadly intelligence.

It's a work in progress, something I'm building on.

I admit the choir parts didn't come out as I wanted them to, I'm still working on it.

It shows promise.

try fading the choir sample in. so each sample starts with zero volume.

the low pitched instrument needs something too. How about some clipping distortion?

This probably isn't changed how you imagined it, but how's this one?

That's not bad at all, though a very different style from the previous track. I'm not sure I like the choral sample. The melody sounds good, but the sample is very very electronic and artificial.

Personally I'd rather hear more of your guitars in this one. ;)

Winter

Hmmmm.  Well, this came off the top of my head for putting guitars in:

http://www.destructavator.com/public/ERut2_f.ogg

Personally IMO I think the first guitar came out better than when the second comes in, but I thought I'd get some input here.  The first guitar coming in certainly sounds...uh...well, I can't think of the right words, but you can listen to it.

And in this one, yes, I axed the choir parts, I still couldn't make them sound good even after more tweaking.

EDIT:  On second thought, I listened to it again, I can see it needs work and developing in various places.  I'll see what I can do with it...

I like the guitars, and I really like most of the track, but the main riff is letting the whole thing down straight from the intro. Three to four-second-long slow notes without variation playing rhythm over a nice catchy beat is like a contradiction in terms. It's not so bad when the guitar is wailing over it but it absolutely cannot carry the track by itself at any point.

Sorry I keep creating more work for you, Destructavator. ;)

Winter

I agree, it needs a lot of work, but then again it is in its infancy as I just recently started it, although I think this one does have potential to eventually be a good track.

Not a problem at all, better to have a well polished and fully developed track after much thoughtful work then to have a rushed, half-baked idea thrown into the game.   I myself favor quality over speed, at least in this type of work.  I recall one time, a number of years back, when I wrote a complete song from scratch all in one day, just to see if I could do it.  I finished it, yes, but it wasn't a good song (in fact, awful).

Here, is this any better?

http://www.destructavator.com/public/UFOa3b.ogg

It's still a very rough work in progress, but I'm a little happier with this one than the last.  I made numerous changes in this version, and tried to make the guitar sound a bit evil.

The whole piece sounds very menacing now and distinct from the other track, I like it a lot.

I really miss the guitars where they go away in the little break. It's like you built the song up to this great crescendo and then it suddenly shifts back a few gears again. I'm not too sure about doing that, but I leave it up to you, since I know you also don't want to drown the track in guitars. I'm assuming the final version is meant to be a bit longer as well.

Winter

I'm still building on it, but yes, the final version will be longer.

As for the part you mentioned, I'll fix that and see what I can do with it.

Glad this partial track is a little better than the first version, although as I said it is still a work in progress.

Given that air combat is supposed to be short, I'd imagine that this track version would now be long enough, and this should loop OK.

I made numerous changes here and there, although I'm still considering more.

Very nice job, it sounds classy and menacing. Thumbs up from me. It can go in the game as soon as you're happy with it.

I'd go ahead and use this one.  Since that post I tried a few more things, but they didn't make it sound any better, I think this latest version is the winner.

License (If this won't work, let me know and I'll pick another): Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License

As usual, feel free to also change the filename if appropriate when adding it to the game.

Related note (no pun intended): IMO I also think this one fits better in the game than the 1st air combat tune I put together in the other thread, although if you want to also put the 1st one in the game (for any purpose, not necessarily air combat) then go ahead, otherwise I'll save it for something else.  As Surrealistik said, the other (first) one does kinda have a problem fitting in with the other tracks in this game, and I think he may have been right when he said it would work better for a "Mega Man" game.  Still, feel free to use it for a cinematic or something else.

the other tracks were released under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 - that would be better - i think the non-commercial stuff is incompatible with the gpl

OK, I'll go with that one then, Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0, to remain consistent.

Honestly I'm not too picky about which license it goes under, just as long as I still get credited somehow for the track, and I'm not worried about that here - I fully trust you guys - I'm really only concerned about others not involved in this project that might make a derivative work from UFO: AI or otherwise might try to take things from this project and not give proper credit.

I'll have to write a note to myself for future reference to stick with the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 for other stuff I might contribute in the future, to avoid this little snag again - sorry!
