Another one of the interesting topics in our UN files is the production of human powered armour. These are suits where much of the usual muscle-work of the soldier is taken over by advanced servomotors, many times more powerful than human muscle tissue. Soldiers wearing a suit of powered armour would be faster, stronger, capable of making powerful jumps and falls that would turn an unarmoured human to pulp.

The problem with these suits has always been the difficulty of building powerful servos into a suit small enough to be worn effectively by a human being. Powered armour has been around as a concept for more than a century, and has seen plenty of use in recent conflicts, but it has yet to materialise in a form that's useful for close quarters urban combat. Current-generation military suits have more in common with tanks than infantry and can't possibly meet our mobility and space requirements.

The research files feature many designs ranging from unarmoured exoskeletons to fully-enclosing 'spacesuits'. We'd like to organise a new research project to sort out the raw data and combine the most promising ideas into an effective powersuit for our soldiers.

Commander, we've successfully prototyped our new powered armour, and I'd hereby like to submit my final report. The prototype is waiting in R&D if you'd like to have a go in it yourself.

Our production design is geared towards maximum protection. It is, in a nutshell, an airtight suit of armour with servo-assisted joints and on-board control system. The outer skin is made from the strongest armouring materials known to man. Ballistic plating covers up to 90% of the body, and the joint connections are woven from several layers of artificial spider silk, offering superior protection and flexibility even at the weakest points.

The inside consists of a thick layer of memory gel covered by an electrically sensitive lining. The gel allows the suit to be fitted to a range of heights and body shapes, so hopefully we shouldn't have to custom-build every suit to fit one specific soldier. The inner lining is an important part of the control system; it detects nerve impulses through the wearer's skin, interprets these signals, and uses them to predict the wearer's movements before they're made. This allows the suit to move simultaneously with the body rather than resisting the user's movements.


The only drawback is that, due to the nature of the suit and its control system, it requires slower and more thoughtful movements to accurately measure what the wearer wants it to do. That means a slight decrease in movements and reaction time.
