Messages
The permanent news line in the upper left always represents the latest news (such as promotions/cashflow/attacks/UFO-sightings) while the extended message button pops up a list of the last 20 newlines. So whenever you notice news, make sure to check the button as well so you don't miss anything.
Mails
Whenever an important event occurs you will get notified by your personal mail client. The Mail symbol on the top of the screen (next to the date) will show up to tell you this is the case.
