Is there a cfg file to change resolution (game wont start)

I have installed RC6 in Ubuntu Edgy with Synaptic.  However i can't start the game - it just kicks me out of X and i have to log in again - i had a similar problem with another game in windows which i got around by changing the resolution to 1280x1024 in a config file - however i can't find a config file with this in

Any suggestions

what are the console messages?

start in xterm and post the output here

also see the wiki - look for the cvar article - the cvar you are searching is named gl_mode
