gettext() caused the game exit segfault - but why?

Back? Good :)

Although removing the call to gettext() has fixed the shutdown problem, I don't know enough (read: anything) about gettext() to understand why calling this during the shutdown process should cause problems.

Can our gettext() gurus shed some light on this?
