thinking about what to do next
« on: January 26, 2012, 05:12:54 pm »
My next project should be something that is either most wanted (by the players) or considered most needed for the game (by the dev team).

So If somebody has an idea what it should be - please write it down here.

Note : I am lacking any other skills than mapping, so the project needs to fit into this category.

Well, we have two big tasks.
First one is missed urban and modern maps.
Second is map for storyline mission — crashed UFO Carrier — we must have the map to move our campaign forward.

When Kildor says "modern maps", he's talking about the fact that our game is set in 2084 but most of our maps look like they take place in 2000.

Both of the things Kildor suggested are needed. Whatever you decide to do, it would be great if you could give it a slightly futuristic look. It's not necessary though.

I would add one other task: we lack crashed UFOs for many of our maps. Adding crashed UFOs to existing tilesets would be nice, and could be a welcome distraction when you are burnt out on a bigger project.

For more on the carrier mission, check our storyline missions.

there are a couple of missing landed UFO tiles from all tilesets too, and "new" UFOs (Corrupter, Bomber, Gunboat) would need maps for them too (both landed and crashed)

Giving a map a futuristic look would be not that hard, I think. Two things to consider :
1) It maybe would look strange between the existing maps, because of the different look.
2) It would need at least some new models (vehicles, furniture).

We have to start sometime. Our maps don't really have a unified look anyway, so I don't consider this a major problem.

2) It would need at least some new models (vehicles, furniture).

We do have some existing models that look a bit futuristic. I can think of at least a motorcycle... Furniture could be created in UFORadiant rather than models (models don't share the same lighting, so I try to avoid them when possible).

But you're right. Some new art assets are probably going to be required, so it will be a bit more work. Same with the UFOCarrier. The UFO or alien base textures are probably not going to be enough. That said, I may be able to help with some new textures for your if you have a need you can fill from FOSS resources out there.

Adding some of the tiles according to http://ufoai.ninex.info/forum/index.php?topic=6440.0;last_msg=50515 should be a good thing to do, so I will take a close look at this first.

Next would be to add something to +city, so the already existing tile can go back into the game ? How about making a hospital or cinema for this? Or some office highrise like Crystan mentioned?

Making the carrier map is something I would really like to do, of course. For the moment I think I do not have the experience needed for such an important map.

@mattn If it is necessary to edit a post, I would like to have some edit note for what was was changed and about the reason for this. This way I have the chance to avoid making the same mistake again.
