St@rcr@ft-type RMA for UFOAI?
« on: February 07, 2011, 02:49:36 pm »
Hi guys,

I am thinking along these lines as in the topic (was a great fan of the first installment of the game, don't know the new version). Remembering planet Char and all the other tilesets in that game, what wold you think about re-creating them for generic

a) terraced landscape (as in military convoi, only flatter). Maybe not more then two or three levels
b) "metal&iron settlement in 2084" future colony type scifi building, again in only two or three levels
c) steampunk/gothic like "hive" type as in the fluff of a successfull miniatures company

Martin

PS: attached is a draft of terraced levels

I have wanted to do something like that for a canyon-type RMA. Looks cool, but you should experiment with level of detail and compile/game performance. I don't think we've done anything with that kind of brush detail in the past so would be useful to know how it performs.

b) "metal&iron settlement in 2084" future colony type scifi building, again in only two or three levels

We don't have any human space stations at the moment and not sure it would make much sense (ufos rule beyond the atmosphere). You can see proposed storyline missions for late-game here.

c) steampunk/gothic like "hive" type as in the fluff of a successfull miniatures company

I'm not quite sure what this would be like. Stylistically we go for less fanciful sci-fi, but if you have some reference images it might make more sense.

Hi, I formed my post carefully because I did not want to cite other people's IP too openly to not create problems for the forum admins.

Is it OK to post pictures here no matter where they come from (e.g. a games workshop site)?

Lets have some references here:

Starcraft "levels":
http://classic.battle.net/images/battle/scc/LP/9906/%282%29Byways.jpg see two height levels, both landscape and architectural. I thought this might be nice for RMA. Consider a wasteland after a nuclear war somewhere where people rebuilt in 2060 or so...

I noted looking through the maps that somehow the "italian-style" capital with large bridges (or canals) with palazzi or so house fronts and large squares and fountains seem to me missing. But maybe I overlooked something.

THinking
"map day +mm_capital eiffel" ...
