Saving America 1 shrimp at a time.
« on: May 25, 2010, 08:24:28 am »
I have been really really looking for ways truck drivers can make a difference.

We cleaned up parking lots by picking up a little trash each time we walked across the lot.  In just a short time the difference was visible to anyone looking.

So today the problem is the economy of the entire world.  But for us the economy of the USA is where to start.

So what little steps can we take as we cling by our fingernails to our jobs driving less and less freight?

I hope many people will come up with ideas, but I have one to start the discussion.  If 20 people read what I say and make one decision a day based on it, only a little will change, BUT f those same 20 people tell 2 other people, and those 2 people make one decision a day, and tell two other people, in a short time we can make a HUGE difference in what is going on in this country.

I went shopping for instant hot apple cider mix today.  I am delivering tomorrow beside a VON'S grocery store so I went there.  I saw the same alpine brand I usually buy from Walmart on the shelves, but beside it I saw boxes of safe way brand apple cider mix. ( for half the price of the  alpine.)

This seamed like a lot of difference so I smugly assumed the Alpine brand would be made in USA and the Safe way brand would be imported.  I stopped to look at the boxes.   WOW   the SAFE WAY brand had product of USA on the box, the alpine brand had distributed by..yada yada   but never said product of anywhere.

This got me thinking, so after looking at the hot coco, and finding the safe way store brand labeled product of USA and the nestles etc all saying distributed by..... I decided to look around the store, Every where I looked the store brands would say product of and it was usually the USA but not always, but the name brands would say distributed by.....

I went to the frozen fish because I had a rude shock in wally world a few weeks ago when every bit of frozen sea food was either product of China, or packaged in china.  I found two brands of frozen fish product of USA in VON'S.

I checked canned beans and fruits, and the same story.

SO I found a way to make a difference, find  product of USA labeled goods and tell everyone you can that they don't have to eat canned fruit from Asia, nor frozen shrimp from Asia, nor even foods from unknown places that don't what to tell you where they are.  YOU can find food labeled in each can, on each box  product of USA..   Look for them, buy them, and don't support the imported food suppliers.  This one thing alone if done by enough people would force stores to bring jobs back to the USA.

What if we did the same about clothes, about anything we buy?

So  Save America  one shrimp or one hot dog or one pizza at a time.

Maybe a spammer, but the other thread this guy made proves IMO that there is a human being behind the username (or spambot tech has gotten [way] better when I wasn't looking).

Anyway, in the case you are a human, I don't know about USA regulations but at least here in Finland, the "Made in Finland" or "Product of Finland" tag can be gained even if just the last phase of production was done here (aka, breads and cakes were baked here, machines and electronics assembled, canned food canned, etc.). A bad but effective way to fool customers where the product actually came from.

Yeah, I thought he was maybe a spambot, but spambots usually try to post links to other stuff. And he DID post only in offtopic. It could be one of those bots that waits until it has gotten a reply, though.

Spammer or not....The idea in the post is an economic policy that is very outdated. It's called 'protectionism'. It was very popular some 80-100 years ago. And didn't work.

There is a little bit of truth in it, though. But things are *much* more complicated than the poster suggests. Here's a little food of thought: What would happen if all US consumers would only buy american oil ?

btw you don't have to buy oil these days. You can collect it for free at the shores of Louisiana  and Mississippi ! Florida coming up soon ! :(((

Well, you were a little... odd.
I mean, Coming on a forum that's about a OPEN-SOURCE game to talk about shrimps, assuming everyone's American.
Also, Giving away your age and address freely on-line... That's not safe, dude.

But, Like legendman's said, 'your welcome'.

It's okay to start topics like that in offtopic, but it's a little strange that someone would do that first thing after registering. I mean, most people would join up because of UFO:AI, right?

Hmm, I'm still not convinced you have quite suspicious signature.  ;) :D

But seriously we have seen quite intelligent spambots recently, sorry. I've replied to your topic because I was not sure, thanks for clarifying.

the site linked in your signature however contained tons of ads and scripts, got removed.

Oh dear, a mistake like this was bound to happen sooner or later.

Yes, we have been fighting and deleting a lot of very convincing spam-bots lately, they're getting progressively trickier and more difficult to identify.

Welcome to the forum, I'm sorry your initial experience here was so... awkward, not to mention embarrassing.

In light of this, perhaps there should be a note on the project page near the link to the forum, or a sticky in the forum somewhere noticeable, that newcomers should first introduce themselves and say something relevant to UFO: AI to avoid being misidentified as a spam bot.  (As opposed to starting out in the off-topic section right off the bat, and not even mentioning the game in the very first post.)

EDIT:  Delaware?  I'm actually not too far away, just in northeast Ohio.  If my 10-year-old Toyota was in better shape I likely could come over, pop in and say Hi if I really wanted to...

I'd have to cross several states, but it would certainly be closer than most other forum members here.
