UGV Equipment?
« on: May 16, 2010, 10:34:52 am »
I'm just wondering, but how are UGV's gonna be equipped?
I'm hoping for a system just like the aircraft equipment screen.

Also, while I'm on the topic of UGV's, what's the weaponry gonna be like?
I'v got a few ideas, but it's all silly stuff like auto-lasers turrets, heavy plasma-cannons and a beefed up multi-rocket-pods. not to mention particle beam based weaponry

I like your thinking. IMHO i think UGV's will be equipped in a mixture of aircraft and soldiers. The weaponry will include a chaingun, lasers, and to keep things fair just the rocket pods. No plasma or particle beams.

why not particle weaponry? I mean, they have a particle weapon for aircraft, why not UGVs?

and whats wrong with plasma? eh?

I'm guessing we will have a system/interface similar to the soldiers. Storage space for some misc. stuff, one slot for ammo (could be included in the storage), one for weapon and one for armor. Simple, effective and time-efficient.

Confirmed weaponry only includes the autocannon module, aka a gatling gun.
Personally I support the Tri-laser module and the grenade launcher. Particle beams would also make sense.

yeah, hertz (mind if I call you that?), those weapons do sound pretty sweet.
can you picture a ugv sized grenade launcher firing flechettes? Man, I'd hate to be on the wrong end of THAT!  ;D

also, since aircraft have them, would the UGV's have interchangeable components like targeting computers?

I don't mind  :).

Yeah, a flechette shot would be downright nasty from a UGV-GL. Actually, everything launched from it would be nasty but a flech-shot would be really awful.

Hmm, hadn't thought of them. I'd think that a targeting computer or an IR-camera or similar stuff would be completely possible parts for them (so add one/two slots for them in my suggested interface above).

Why it annoys you? I know the weaponry sucks right now but I doubt that's the reason.

Is anybody working on models for these yet? I might take a look if I feel megalomaniac  ;)

IMHO, the autocannon module shouldn't be a gattling gun, but a regular, singe-barrel chaingun.

There's also the issue that gattlinguns are very innacurate. Quite the contrary, above 3000 rpms, they become more accurate than single-barreled guns!

i wonder if moment of inertia might have something to do with the increased accuracy?

I have a theory regarding that result: the single-barreled is more accurate but try to aim such gun at full-auto, especially when both you and target are moving. The gatling gun, however, throws so much lead into the air that accuracy ratings go out of the window (of a skyscraper). They are nigh-guaranteed to hit with at least a few rounds even if fired inaccuratly.
I think the reasoning behind the autocannon module is that it could, in theory, throw ludicrous amounts of lead if necessary. It may be a bit too unnecessary though.
