About stun rod and bloodspider in ufopedia
« on: May 09, 2010, 12:48:34 am »
Here referred bloodspider. If I'm playing for the first time, and I play for the first time, I have no idea who is this bloodspider.

I propose to replace the reference to a large alien on something like: ... Commander, we have sent an agent to test this device on something bulk. Our agent made his way to the zoo in the nearby city and tested the unit on an elephant. I suggest to you his report: "With a third of an elephant roared and fell to the ground in convulsions, furiously rolling his eyes. Employees ran the zoo, and within a few hours trying to revive him. By dawn, they managed to lift an elephant, but he drove two poor fellows on the tree and did not want to let them out. I have every reason to report that the aliens might like this weapon, even the thick-skinned and a massive" ...

I translated the text by Google, but the idea I think will bring

How come you haven't encountered/researched the Bloodspider? You haven't killed any of those small, robotic enemies yet but still you managed to research the stun rod? Just how fast is your research?

Oh and no, I don't think it should be referenced to a large organic thing. Bloodspiders are robotic, so the point is he's telling you that you can also disable robots with the stun rod. This is to inform those who think that electric weapons wouldn't work on robots.

...unfortunately during the development it came to a tragic accident concerning a stun rod, a tamagochi and the wrong assumption, tamagochis are fed with electrical energy. Lets say, this incedent was fatal for the tamagochi :-P

Okay, seriously: It is possible to first research the stun rod and meet the bloodspider afterwards. If the player is X-Com experienced and values the early alien research, it is likely, too. I met on the bloodspider the very next mission after researching the stun rod (in version 2.1) myself. Well, but since I met my first scout vessel after grounding three harvesters it didn't bother me too much.

Currently on my very hard campaign I'm approaching the end of June and I'm only now starting to see Ortnoks. No bloodspiders yet, despite a lot of terror missions.

I have a stun rod, but I have not seen bloodspider. Why is the wiki says about bloodspider, but unexplored types of aliens called "unknown" - inconsistencies.

Maybe the reference should be switched so that if the player hasn't seen a bloodspider, the research article instead refers to an accident involving an UGV with metal armor installed, with the end result being a deeply fried internal computer. Then Dr. Connor would speculate that if the aliens would start to use robots in addition to organic troops, the stun rod would be able to knock them out too.

Too hard, may just have to mention that the soldiers would not use stun rod (accidentally) on the tanks because they are easily damaged, which implies the applicability of the weapons on robots when robots will have aliens

Why so complicated?
If the storyline of a city being attacked at the start of all this happens to be actual at this dev, there is a quite easy way to modify the text to the bloodspiders.
The bloodspiders were most likely to be part of the initial alien attack on Mumbai, so these robots had been seen by humans (even if the player himself didn't encounter them).  So refer to this attack. Tell that there were these so called bloodspiders, mechanical terror units, involved in the first invasion and that they were vulnerable against overcharging (e.g. in contact to a high voltage power line), so the chances are quite good the stun rod may overcharge and temporaly disable their circuits, too. (All that has to be done is giving the player the idea, it could be effective to use the stun rod on a robot, and sugguesting this might work is enough to plant that idea).

Does a scientist really have to hear a story from a grunt to understand what high voltage can do to a circuit board?

It is not about what a scientist may have or have not to hear, but what the player of this game has to hear to even try it out.
Of course you could also only write: The electrical charge is most likely to overload electronical equipment theese aliens might bring along. But why not also write, that this electronical equipment is seen not to have sufficient anti em-shields?

i am nowhere like a specialist on robotics, but don't the bloodspiders have metallic shell?
wouldn't that be enough em-shield?
afaik, metal has mobile electrons, so all such fields should get balanced by the electrons.
wrong?

Electromagnetic fields and direct application of high voltage are two different things.  The bloodspiders would probably have ceramic shells, anyway.

I don't think the aliens are stupid enough not to protect their computers well enough from EM-blasts. Metal shield around the computer should work well AFAIK.

Technical Specifications: HPGL Grenade Launcher

blah-blah-blah

 Addenda

Along with sniper rifles and rocket launchers, this is one of the few standard-issue human weapons that are fully effective against robotic aliens.
