Soldier Uniform Colors for new solider models
« on: June 26, 2009, 09:38:05 pm »
OK, as some of you know I've been working on new models for the soldiers, to go with the new animations - I've heard people ask for this and that in uniform color, and I've put more work into the .blend file by adding new camo and solid colors for the upcoming soldiers.  This is a graphic that shows - so far - all of the material textures I've got put together and ready to go for the newer soldier models.

In the latest blender file, which I haven't uploaded yet as I'm still working on it, I cut out the extra copies of the models and stuck to just one for male and one for female, and put all the numerous color textures into cubes in a separate scene.  The final soldier model textures should then be easy to re-create by swapping materials in Blender by simply selecting a new camouflage material from the third scene where all the cubes are.  I should have done this before - it really cuts down on the size of the whole Blender file without all those extra copies of models.

Re-creating the final textures for the whole models is then simple - just by using the "Bake" function they can be re-rendered.

** Please keep in mind that some of these color patterns are meant for multiplayer, and obviously wouldn't be worn by real soldiers  **

If anyone wants a color or pattern not shown here in the game, just ask (as long as it is a serious request, nothing silly of course).

Please also be aware that lighting and shading will affect final results, as well as how good or crappy your computer screen is.

Feedback on how these look is of course welcome.

One minor thing that bothers me: you only used Flecktarn style dot camos instead of square digital camos. Very minor thing but just pointed out.
Also a simple request: brickwall style black and red camo.

Thanks for the feedback - To be honest I wasn't quite sure what you're talking about at first, but fortunately search engines have image search functions these days.

I can probably turn the camo textures into something like or close to a digital square camo pattern with a filter or some editing, there's probably several ways I can approach it.

As for "brickwall style camo," I'm afraid I couldn't find any examples of what you're talking about with a quick search on the net - By any chance do you have a picture or a link?  I know what a brick wall looks like, but do you mean alternating red and black "bricks"?

Edit: I figured out one way to do the digital camo thing, I started with three of the color patterns, if they don't look too bad I can then do the rest.

When this gets done there will be ~28 possible texture patterns, plus the "brick" one once I know what it is supposed to look like.   :o

another thing, Desert camo tends to be heavier on tans, beige and light browns. Last I saw, there isnt any black in it. Just trying to help accuracy

LOL,

some suggested seach terms for digital cammo patterns

CADPAT
MARPAT (desert and Woodland patterns)
UCP (universal Camoflauge pattern) - works well as an urban
the us airforce digital tigerstripe is a hoot

Also take a peek at some some non-digital camo patterns
Multi-cam by Crye
The aussie Desert is a hoot. (purple? WTF!)
several of the flectarns look good

Actually what I meant by brickwall style was basically red rectangles with black between the rectangles but if you are going to make a digital square version of the red camo it's not really needed.

Thanks for the links and search terms, they gave me a lot to work off of.

I think I've almost figured out a good digital camo pattern now, as the earlier one had the pixelized squares cut too large - how do these look?  (I didn't do them all, but if the digital ones done here look good I can do the rest.)

I can also add, at the bottom, a few multi-cam and other combinations that PhilRoi mentioned.

i like the 1. digital camo pattern a bit more. the new version is quite similar to the once on the left side.

EDIT: btw: blurred do they also look good. nice work destructavator :).

EDIT 2: ure gray isn't really gray, is it? hard to differentiate between gray and khaki..... orange or teal are also nice for multiplayer. maybe better than 2 different green.

Hmmm... Perhaps I reduced the size of the squares a bit too much - This is easy to fix though.

How does the digital in this one look?

Edit: A did a little more work, and did a few more textures as well, in the second picture.

I'm also seriously thinking about replacing the solid purple with orange, as it looks close to the red and from a distance it might not look too much different.

A little bit offtopic question - will UGV camo paint be customizable too?

A little bit offtopic question - will UGV camo paint be customizable too?

I suppose it could be, if the UGV source models are made in Blender - if so, then it would be very easy to import from one .blend file (the one with all these materials and textures you see here), into the other .blend file (with all of the UGVs).

If not, if the UGVs are created with a different program, it could be done but with more work, because then I'd have to export all these Blender textures into graphic files, make them seamlessly repeatable, and then someone would have to import them into the other program.

I don't know what program was used for the UGVs, but once the soldier model is done and I also finish with these camo textures, all these Blender files I'm working on will likely go into the data source where anyone could export whatever they want from them.

Edit: An alternative would be to import the UGVs into Blender and then re-texture them.
