Ufo: TTS - New Ufo remake
« on: April 27, 2009, 07:22:03 pm »
This time it's more faithful remake, it even uses graphics from original game.

Here's project page:

Looks nearly Identical to the Original.  Not sure what Improvements he can work with there.

Also looks like its a 1 man band.  He's going to need a larger development team if he's looking to create anything worthy.

Oh, I wouldn't say that. Since he's basically aiming to take the original game and improve on it, he doesn't have to create graphics or build a game concept. All he has to do is code a new engine with new features, and maybe do some extra menus. If he's skilled and motivated enough, he should be able to pull it off on his own.

Hello,

I'm not the author, i'm just a messenger ;)

As for your question - he is using c++ and direct X.

About open sourcing - i've tried to convince him on project xenocide forum, but without any luck. Maybe you people would like to try ;) Or maybe we should wait until he will change his mind.

As for this project, i think it's quite interesting. Honestly i waited for such project for long time. UFO: AI is great, but it would still be interesting to play original ufo on new engine, with higher resolution (like in ufo2000), with some new cool additions.

There are many projects with engine reimplementations, like open transport tycoon for ttd, exult for ultima, fheroes2 for homm2, and far far more. It would be nice if someone could make such project for ufo.

I also have another idea. Maybe some of you guys with high diplomacy skill could contact pocket ufo team and ask them for source code. AFAIK they reimplemented whole game. Such project could be converted into full pc port, taking advantages of higher resolution, pc mouse etc.

I don't really follow the other projects, so I don't know about things like that.

Nods nods. I perfectly understand.

Not mani ppl are crazy gamers like me. lol. I practically tried tracking at least 5 diff x-com like proj:
X-Force, Proj Xenocide, Cydonia's fall, UFO2000 (the one for multiplayer capability), and this UFOAI.

But unfortunately, most drop off and the onli ones playable are Xforce and this UFOAI. And of course UFO2000 for those mplayer which i am not really into or interested.

A multiplayer "remake" (I quote since it doesn't remake the single player game) of the original UFO.

Um... doesn't this sound an awful lot like a game that has already been done and is Free Software?

http://ufo2000.sourceforge.net/

That is all.

The plan is that it will be multiplayer/singleplayer remake.

No, ufo2000 is only about battles . This game will also provide multiplayer game for strategic part (if i understand it correctly).

It's kinda sad that author don't want to open source it. This could become something like openttd for ttd. But it's author choice, we can't expect that every game author will open source his games (however it would be great). If you want, you could try to convince him. I tried, but i'm not good open source advocate.

As for public release. There may be a release at end of may/beggining of june.

Sadly, as far as I know, this means x86 and Microsoft Windows only.

No x86 Mac native.
No x86 Linux native.
No PPC Mac at all.
No PPC Linux at all.

Yes, I know about Wine and Emulators. That's ok (only; not good, not great, just ok) for x86 hardware.

Oh well. I run XCom 1 in qemu on my G4 mac. (Dos version :-)
