German writing style
« on: July 25, 2008, 03:59:04 pm »
Hello,

Sorry for my bad English, I am out of school for a long time...

In my opinion, the writing style of some ufopedia-articles is inappropriate. It is (in some cases) unscientific and informal, more in the way of chatting (does this mean "plaudern"?), with emotional ratings and bloodthirsty descriptions and with strange terms. A scientific/military report isn t written that way.
I use to fix some of the stylistically mistakes, but I haven t that time to fix all articles.

Gruss,

Cato.

Kannst du etwas genauer eingrenzen welche Artikel dich stören?

in places, I think the original English needs a more scientific writing style.

invention of the word "amperage" springs to mind. (note: voltage is not scientific style either, should be potential difference. engineers and fitters tend to be sloppy about this).

Not just a more scientific style... currently everything is written in a "chatting style". It would be more convenient if those articles are written in a "data sheet" style...
Weapon:
Damage:
Range:
Accuracy:
Ammunition:
Some words about the operation method of the weapon...

Or for other research topics: Just more information and less "blaaah" :)

Sorry, I have to disagree. Imho the proposals and research result mails should remain in the style they are (just fix the translation bugs).

Why ?
1. A research proposal is a request for budget. Never try to confront a person who can give you budget (Top-manager, general, boss,...) with scientific talk or plain data facts. You will almost certainly fail to get your budget coz they simply don't understand.

2. We don't know how formal conversations among top-mgrs will be by 2084.

3. If you want the plain data, you can look it up in the ufopedia right after reading the mail. Ok, one could append the datasheet to the mail.

4. ok, it's hard to read through the rather verbose passages of those emails while you can't wait to equip your soldiers with that new stuff. But imho eg. the descriptions of how they found out add much to the atmosphere of the game.

the wiki stuff is automatically merged to the po files by the developers from time to time. just make your fixes and they will be in the po files a "few days" later.
