Modified Gun Sounds
« on: November 15, 2007, 05:03:01 am »
I was feeling that a lot of the gun sounds in the game lacked the "oomf" I felt they needed - the shotguns being the worst. That's not to knock Alex's work at all - it's excellent! These are more a matter of taste than anything else, and all the original work is Alex's anyways. :)

I used a combination of existing sounds from the game to make these modified versions. Most of it was just adding multiple versions of the same sound at different frequencies.
For the bolter rifle, I added a bit of a charge-up 'bzzt' from the electrolaser sounds.

Some sound decent to me, although others posted here have some distortion, as if they were mixed a little too loud.

What software did you use to modify the sounds?

To get rid of the unwanted distortion, you might want to reduce the volumes in the mix a little on some of these...

Also, a good EQ plugin can make a big difference.

I'd be willing to give more advice, but again I'd need to know what software and plugins you're using.

I just used Audacity. I can't hear any distortion myself, though, and I have a pretty decent headset. If it's clipping you're hearing, I still have the .aup (source) files and can reduce the volume a bit.

It might be clipping, although to be honest I didn't compare the samples side by side with the originals (which I probably should have done before giving feedback - sorry, my fault!).  It could also simply be a difference in soundcards, not just the headphones.  I do have more than one computer that I could play these back on, and I know from experience that both my computers do not sound exactly the same playing back audio.  (One's a desktop with 2 M-Audio Delta 192 cards in sync, the other is a laptop with an Indigo-IO from Echo Audio, and some sound/music files sound better on one than the other.)

I'll get back to this later when I have more time to compare samples and give more feedback...

(Sorry I didn't get back to this earlier...)

Some of these do sound good, IMO, although I didn't actually compare side-by-side with the originals.  At the very least I think some are certainly usable.

Some sound like the effect tails were cut off short by a slight amount, but that could simply be from how the original clips were recorded.  The last one, "sniperrifle_b.wav", seems to have some extra length not in the others.  (Again, I didn't check these thoroughly yet, just quickly via Windows Media Player.)
