just found out that NASA release loads of lovely pictures, and don't even copyright them.

eg

useful somewhere? it could be made more green to fit existing colour schemes.

Isn't it nice what you get when applying colors to what shows up in x-ray gamma infared and other goodies?  I wonder what you'd get by photographing clouds with the same devices they use for nebula.

Yeah, NASA puts out quite a bit of great resources (NASA stuff has to be published in "Public domain" I think) out there.

We already use the blue marble stuff for the geoscape, but there sure is more we can use.

My personal source of inspiration is located at the Astronomy Picture of the Day give it a try - the archive alone is worth it  :)

this page has no copyright notice on it, but it does note who should be given credit, which is line line with the rest of the info from your link.

So, NASA release some really nice images, which are not the subject of copyright.

Not really 'uncopyrighted'.

In most cases stuff is always copyrighted - often depending on the country and local law (i think the USA is one of the few exceptions - but no hard facts ehre). There is enough legalese in this to keep hordes of lawyers busy for eons to come :-/

My use of the words "Public Domain" most probably was not the most exact way to describe NASA stuff though :) - See blondandys comment.

Always thought that would be cool as a background shot in the game some how.  Oh, and the current image too:
