How things are going with the geoscape ?
« on: March 13, 2007, 07:02:06 am »
I was wondering how much you guys worked on the geoscape. I was looking at Project Xenocide project who is currently experiencing a slow down. Some people think that they should have started developping the tactical aspect of the game instead of the geoscape, some dont't.

My idea is, lets assume they have a moreless complete geoscape, would it be possible to split UFO AI into two parts:

1 part, project xenocide geoscape
2 part tactical aspect and base building using quake 2 engine.

When going to a crash site game switch from Project xenocide to UFO AI, same thing when user click on the base represented by a spot on the geoscape ?

Maybe we can work something out with them
thx

no, this is not possible - our licences aren't compatible and they use a completly different engine (and they seams to switch things often). We are using our 2d geoscape and are currently implementing a 3d version, too - http://mattn.ninex.info/screenshots/3dglobe02.jpg (which if far from beeing finished atm

Geoscape seem more than adequate to me, why switch to a 3d?

Also, I have never encountered an interception mission, only landed encounters. Am I missing something ore are these not implemented?

Noone talked about switch. You can decide if you want to use 2d or 3d geoscape.

These are not implemented. Yet.

I am convinced that a 3d globle will bring much more "original" x-com feeling than a flat map. Have both options is indeed the best idea.

Are both currently implemented? I must have missed this setting somehow.

Thats weird because after playing for an hour or so a green message scrolled up the screen that said "UFO's Appear in the Skies" or something like that...  And then I started getting interception missions.

Oh, of course there is currently some basic thing to have fun with - ufo appears, one sends a aircraft, ufo is down and one always win. But when i was saying "not implemented" i was thinking about real interceptions, when you use your aircraft carefuly, deciding which aircraft weapons to use, and you never know if you win, and after shooting down the ufo you got crashmission there, and [...]

...But only if you shoot the ufo down over land - you lose it over water...

Good point...

Actually I was starting to think UFO's would never appear at all - is there a way to make them show up a bit earlier on in the game?

yes - you should read the campaign definition in the wiki and modify the stages in base/ufos/campaign.ufo script file
