Problem with touchpad

Hi

I've just complied UFO on  Ubuntu Edgy on HP notebook and the problem is that it is impossible to operate the game with touch pad. The cursor is so sensitive I cannot aim at the button to start the game not to mention play it. I've some problems with sound, and a strange horizontal line across the screen, but these are minor nuisances. Can anyone help?

I've looked through the forums, and it seems that this is the usual problem with a mouse being redrawn each 1 second - which is a bit to rarely. I couldn't find a fix that would work for me. I am running Ubuntu Edgy with Intel graphics and GLX enabled.  My sound looks like this:

and it doesn't matter if I compile or use the deb's from repositories. Any ideas?

P.S. It shows 20000 fps when I start and then drops down to 4.2 -4.3 fps - I guess this is why the mouse moves so badly, but why is it so low?

I am sorry for flooding the board. I've played with setting a bit and it seems that my fps is better when I switch the resolution to the minimal. This would imply that my graphic card is very, very bad. On the other hand I can run Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory on the engine of Quake III without ANY problems. I am really confused :(

I still believe that the First UFO is the best game ever written, and it is a pity I cannot try this version.

Any help would be really appreciated.

please check whether you have activated direct rendering

glxinfo | grep direct
should reveal this. we don't have a software renderer and if your notebook only has shared memory this might be the reason for the lags

well one more info - I got the following fps with glxgears:

and it stabilizes around 3000 - not great, but not bad either. I am running out of ideas why ufo is sooooo slow.

when I run a parallel top process it shows that ufo is taking 98% of the CPU i.e. all that is available. something is seriously wrong with the code, or it always behaves like this?

I did a more thorough checkup and I am sure that I have hardware acceleration.

I have another suspicion, the warning my OpenGL produces means that it has no acceleration for 32bit graphic and my glxinfo ends with a line:

which, I guess, means that depth 32 is not supported. Is it the depth that UFO uses? I couldn't find find any option to change it. Can I change it by recompiling?

I am lost. What else can I do? I am running WolfenStein in 1024x768 with some special effects on 15-30fps, and I am running ufo in 300x500 with 4.2 fps even on the welcome screen.

Do you mean in config? It was zero I changed it to one, but it did not improve anything :( still between 1.9 and 4.0 fps.

I have the same problem with the mouse being redrawn very occasionaly but on completely different hardware: Asus A8N-SLI and Nvidia GeForce 6600 with only 1.4 fps.
RC6 build from source on Suse 10.2.

in_dgamouse does not change anything.
Changing desktop from 24 bit colour depth to 16 (or less) does not help either.

BTW: The windows version runs perfectly on an IBM X41 subnotebook (16MB Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 chipset; WIN XP).
