How close is the game to final release?

I want to play this game but not as a beta tester. How close is the game to being in its final form, or are they still adding things?

We're still adding things. The game will not be "complete" for years - but you're welcome to aid in the development process by finding bugs, suggesting changes or even work on the game directly. Please take a look around on the wiki to see what you can do.

err... will the game ever reach the "final" version? there will be even 17.8.6. version too, not? while the game is in the patching status, it wont be finalized.

You know how it goes with open-source games. As long as someone is still willing to tinker with it, it won't be final.

However, there are certain important elements that are planned or at least on the wish list. Until those elements are in place, the core game can not be considered "complete".

Technology tree.
Doors support.
2x2 units support.
Event support during the battle.
Aircraft interceptions.
Campaign storyline-comply.
Alien bases.
Nation happiness.
Armour support.
XVI.

A lot of art work (2d art, sound, particles).
Proper balancing of almost everything.
