Just love this kind of game, I have....
fallout tactics
silent storm
ufo afterlight
jagged alliance 2
ufo ai of course

Now can anyone tell more of any similar games. would prefer turn based but games like icewind dale that are space bar paused are fine too. :)

Xcom and clones:
X-COM: Ufo Defense(aka UFO: Enemy Unknown) obviously...
UFO: Extraterrestrials

Other squad turn-based:
Incubation
Ball bullet gun(snes, fantranslated from japanese)
Front mission(snes)

More strategy turn-based combat:
Battle for Wesnoth(freeware)
Fantasy Wars
Ogre Tactics(playstation, final fantasy tactics is a clone of it, so is fire emblem really)
Lufia 1 and 2(snes, again similar to ogre tactics)
Bahamuth lagoon(snes, again similar to ogre tactics)

Other:
Starship Troopers(really fun, but real time, squad based, no pause bar, you can pause, but cannot give orders when paused)

If you care to dig back that far, you could try Battle Isle 1, 2 or 3 (4 seems kind of crappy, and Incubation isn't that good either). A freeware clone of Battle Isle exists. It's called Advanced Strategic Command (ASC), and it's really terrible. Far too many features that tie the game down in a marsh of micromanagement.

Fallout tactics was incredible. The point buy system unfortunately was grossly inaccurate in reflecting the value of many items, and there were several degenerate elements (voodoo/psycho drugs in particular) but with the proper self-imposed restrictions, multiplay was great fun.

Hmmm

Tactics Ogre (GBA)
TacticsArena.com (freeware last time I checked with an option to upgrade)
Pox Nora (freeware but it also has an option to upgrade with "booster packs." It screams Mageknight.)

Based on Battle Isle there is the 15 years old game "Historyline 1914 - 1918". Nice gameplay and many informations about the first ww.

Unfortunately I've never had a Windows computer to try it on but there is also Laser Squad Nemesis.

Space Force: Captains looks to fall along the lines of squad based as well more or less (since you control a captain and his squad of ships)

http://www.gameborder.com/store/Spaceforce%3A%20Captains/

Not too sure though (still downloading it) but the demo's free,   ;D

More good ones include:
Front mission 3(psx)
Vandal hearts 1&2(psx)

And revisiting a game already listed:
Jagged Alliance 2 has a nice mod named JA2 1.13(last official patch was 1.12), which adds a lot, changes some things, has made it infinitely easier to mod even for the everyday gamer, and is just a very good upgrade package in general.

Genrin no Kishougun 1 and 2 are decent, if you like strategy RPGs. I don't know if you can call those squad-based games, though. But in that genre there's also your Fire Emblem series (NES, SNES, GBA, GC, Wii) and Farland Story (on the PC-9801, though Farland Saga is for PC).
