Coding / Github?
« on: February 15, 2020, 10:46:53 pm »
The game is semi-dormant, which happens to many projects. Often it takes a group
of very active people keeping something going; and then some helper folks
emerge.

Battle for Wesnoth is doing fairly well. They are also quite active on github.

Would it be worth to consider moving to github? The issue tracker is fairly
nice, and perhaps people could work on some smaller things that may be
missing, todo list entries and such.

Discussion / History of the Project?
« on: November 23, 2019, 03:34:44 am »
Does anyone know the history of the project? E. g. when it was started, who started it,
who were the people who kept it going etc...?

I don't remember who started it but I think it was someone from Germany. Might be
wrong, my memory fails me (that is why I note down everything!)

Are there any plans to move to GitHub? Might make the project a bit more active perhaps (no idea, I have just visited since
my inactivity of a few years).

Attracting content/art people is not always easy. I think the wesnoth project did a good job here - perhaps some
of this can be translated towards UFO AI, though I think 3D models are harder than 2D paintings.

I think the project may have lost a little bit of momentum - guess it may take a while
before it can pick up. I have noticed that in regards to other phpbb webforum; some
of it is because some people switched to discourse, but facebook also "stole" a lot
of activity here.

> What about you all?

I may eventually play UFO AI again after several years but it depends a lot on
the time that I have available. Presently I can not too easily commit time into
playing, due to various reallife constraints.

Firstly, FAQs can be outdated and not be updated. I know this is the case for a MUD
I used to play. The old FAQ has literally not been changed in 15 years.

As for activity, even in larger projects such as the ruby language or the linux kernel, it
can take a long time to integrate patches, depending on the patch itself and the quality
of said patch.

So, frankly, I think you are pushing too much assumptions into it.

My suggestion is this:

- (a) is there a problem (yes/no)?

Sounds like yes if an infinite loop can happen.

- (b) go to see that this bug can be fixed.

It may be better to describe the bug, and then find code that can
remove it rather than be so attached to it. It's just code in the end
and I have not seen any public statement about that the main devs
will not fix bugs. And no, I couldn't care any less about any outdated
FAQ. I have seen that in projects such as wesnoth where there is
such a huge difference from one dev to the next that I am not going
to just believe any random text written by anyone - and that is a general
statement by the way, not necessarily confined to your comment above
alone only.

I think it happens quite frequently that people take a break.

I took a time-out more or less, due to reallife-related reasons.

Reallife is still a major reason why I am not playing as many
games as I used to do, but about a month or two I started
to play wesnoth a bit and it improved a LOT.

Today I had a look at UFO AI since I remember that the game
was great when I played it some years ago. It's nice to see that
the game is still around - hopefully the momentum can be maintained
or expanded. It's always difficult to keep open source games running.

The webforum works though which is good. And as can be seen by
the post above, old people sometimes return too. (Old in the sense
of returning people, not necessarily their absolute age) :)

Feature Requests / Re: Gas masks
« on: August 08, 2017, 09:18:00 am »
Gas masks would be pretty nice; could add an additional tactical effect such as causing dizziness to aliens and making it harder for them to see, whereas your own troops could have special equipment and not get affect anywhere near as much.

I have not really been keeping up to date with the game for a long while due to reallife issues and time constraints but it seems as if the project has become a bit less active than before? Other game projects are struggling too such as wesnoth; and games such as warmux or boswars have been entirely abandoned.

I'd wish there would be some concerted effort going on to preserve games and keep the updated even with different people in charge.

Google's policy is very annoying.

It would be nice if we could NOT have to use google and get handicapped by companies restricting access to content but the opposite is happening - see W3C adopting DRM into their "open" standard.

« on: August 09, 2015, 08:16:16 pm »
I also concur with the threadstarter.

It has been about 2 years since I last tried UFO-AI so I don't know what has changed.

I am also fine with the difficulty by the way.

But I was wondering, perhaps there could be intro-level style commitments.

Something like a "training area" where you can shoot with a paint ball against other team members. Hmm perhaps not a good idea...

Or perhaps one could hire some special actors that have a good AI but work stand-alone and can help the team. Not too many, just
one or two to help out.

Discussion / Could you add IRC to the FAQ please?
« on: June 30, 2014, 11:18:15 pm »
Hi guys,

In the FAQ

http://ufoai.org/wiki/Manual/FAQ

IRC is not mentioned.

Could you please add a section and let us know if there is an IRC channel?

I am sometimes connecting to #wesnoth to discuss with the folks there, it would be awesome to
find out if UFO AI has an IRC channel as well and where it is - the FAQ could mention that,
including if it has no IRC channel, as that saves me, and probably others, the time to look
for it (because I just tried to look for it; a FAQ could cover that)

Thanks.

Feature Requests / Customize Strengths of Aliens
« on: November 29, 2011, 10:31:40 am »
Hi,

It would be kinda neat to be able to customize aliens.

Not so much the looks of aliens, but why not that too (provide some .gif or .jpg or .png or what not, or if it has to be a 3D model, that could be used too).

Also customize the values of the aliens, and a pre-set of behaviour (sneaky ... aggressive... cautious... swam-mode)

The idea is that a player could customize heavily before starting to play an Alien Invasion game.

I wanted to state something, but the forum software was changed, and all those new icons are confusing me right now ... must be a recent change, can't have been more than 30 days

took me 20 seconds before I found the tiny quote button... I swear, 80% of those Icons I will never need...

So I will bitch instead about the move to the forum :(

I miss the old forum style!
