Tactics / Research Priorities
« on: August 12, 2007, 07:27:56 am »
I had been focusing on armor and the path that leads to alien captures.  Honestly, the weapons have never excited me that much as I seem to do fairly well with earth-based weapons until I am doing live-captures, and from there, I'm focused purely on that so I am almost entirely non-lethal.

In light of the above information - Screw the armor.  Gas Gernades - Here I come!

Okay, withdraw the sound submission for the electrolaser I made.  I'll pull it off the FTP server.  The GeoScape sounds I made are all legit as I made those from sine waves I generated.

I'm trying to contact the owner of the 500kV video to see if it is copyright in any fashion.  It was recorded by Neil Brady, the job foreman on site, working for Nevada Power Company.  Apparently, that was a mostly de-energized circuit.  It only had about 100 amps of current flowing when it made that Jacob's Ladder you see.  (Yes, I've been doing some research into it.   )

There's a new version on my FTP server:

ftp://12.149.180.130/UFO AI Sounds.zip

Included in the ZIP are the source files from the http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/  website someone linked before.  (I'm assuming this site will be found to be a kosher source; if not, I'm not sure I want to screw with this much more.)  The only additional materials are the video clip that Winter linked, and a set of sweeping logimetric sine waves that I generated and freely relinquish all rights to over to the project.

I'm thinking of playing with the sound a bit more, but am torn... The build-up can either be the laser, or it could be the eletricals generating the needed charge.  Not sure how it would be.

Feedback is always welcome.

I realize that most of you are overseas, and may not have access to it, but then again, you may...

My impression has always been that the soldiers in PHALANX would be akin to the elite of counter-terrorist teams today.  I'm talking guys that can speak 5 languages minimum, can make an IED out of the stuff lying under your car seat, and shoot you with a handgun at 150 meters.  :o

A good representation, I feel, is the show "The Unit".  If you have access to it, it's a good source of inspiration for how the units should behave vocally, IMHO.

Always thought that would be cool as a background shot in the game some how.  Oh, and the current image too:

I've been playing the latest Dev build with sound disabled, and I am maintaining a CONSISTENT 65+ FPS.  System Specs:
Intel C2D E6400
2Gb @ 1066MHz
74Gb 10K Raptor (System Drive)
400Gb Sata 3.0Gb/s (Data and Game drive)
Creative SB Audiology (forget the exact model)
WinVista x64 Ultimate (Hey, I got it legal for $45, why not try it?)

I tried the different sound renderers, and I can't say as any of them had a major impact.

I realized I was the one who kicked off this little thread, but has anyone considered additional exposure (even this) might be good for the project?

Just a thought.

Leilei-
Since you seem to be quickly becoming the resident license authority (and since I freely admit I know nothing of it, this is my first time ever contributing to something like this) - Does that CC license mean I can use them for sampling for creating derivative works?  I'm working on sounds for the GeoScape and the Electrolaser, and need legit sources to sample from.

Thanks in advance.

I'll see what I can do.  Give me some time... I'll tell you up front, I'll be aiming for creating roughly the same sound, I'll just do it with a other sources... I say that so you won't be freaked out if the new one sounds similar to the old.

Is the Videos.Google source an okay one?

They came from the FX section of WavCentral.com, the video that was linked above, and a few sine-waves that I generated.

I have a male tom that's been meowing for weeks for a woman...

Best I could do is offer some "Kittie" porn under GPL.
