I think you're going in the right direction with the textures and general color theming. The long thing by the edge has "public transit" written all over it, though.

Problem is, there's no real way of telling which firemodes use recoil and which don't.

Alright, so basically the whole system that delays a soldier's shot by the TUs necessary to use the firemode needs to go, if I've understood the above correctly.

I don't think shots should be instantaneous, though. There should be SOME delay that prevents soldiers from taking shots at enemies that are only briefly visible (e.g. only for one step before vanishing again). Ideas?

Does anyone know what is actually wrong with the RF system? And I don't mean a description of what it doesn't do and what it should do. I'm asking about what is WRONG with the system itself.

Sure, that's true, but that's not the point. The point is that the aliens' technology outperforms human technology on all fronts, because that's what the game is about. The whole UFO formula revolves around the concept of technologically superior aliens overwhelming humanity, and humanity beating them by reverse-engineering their tech and using it against them.

So alien technology is not "different", it is better. By definition.

That said, they wouldn't actually "upgrade" to human technology, because human technology is inferior to alien technology. But they could make their own versions of some human weaponry that performed much better by mixing in their own technology.
