Maybe the ground has some affect too, depending if it is soft (like gras) or hard (like metal).
It definitely has. If you throw a grenade on snow, it will not bounce for example.

All other grenades work fine for me. Sometimes I do "Kamikazeattacks" with grenades and very often the attacker survises and solves problematic situations. Especially plasma and fire is very useful.
I usually do that with cannon fodders and plasma blades. On hard difficulty levels, aliens are likely to survive a plasma grenade when not wounded (especially since I usually am not very good at aiming with grenades).

I never ever had a radar tower destroyed (by aliens).
For my part, strangely, I had a UFO Yard destroyed at the beginning of the game (no UFO there when attacked). Then, no installation at all have been ever attacked during the rest of the game. I don't know what triggers UFO to attack installations but it seems to need some love ^^

From what I've tried, you cannot buy anything if in debt. In reality, you can only be in debt by paying facilities (base facilities running costs and wages)

I guess the easiest would be to post your log file. See here to see where to find it:

Then, someone might be able to help ^^

You need to go on the square the dead (or stunned) soldier/alien is on and open inventory. You will see the carried stuff on the ground and you should be able to pick up what you want.
Nte that it's also the way to drop equipment.

If there was a sound or better, something visual (as I mostly play without sound) saying that it works, it would be great.

Seems like you didn't download the right file. It should be a bit more than 1 Gb. Link:
http://ufoai.org/snapshots/ufoai-latest-win32.exe

Considering 2.6, it is far from unstable. I played a 1 year old version and got no crash at all. There are some glitches and things that can be improved but it is more than enough to play.

I guess it is not likely to be added soon. This game is a spare time project and it grows with the time the volunteers want to put in. But if you want, feel free to help and create that map you are dreaming of.

for my part, I almost never use flashbang or grenades. It is too random IMHO and it happened too much that I throw a flashbang just in front of a sheevar or taman and he just plays his turn when I end mine just like if I did nothing. Usually, I only use flashbang as a last resort when my soldier is sure to die (and usually, he dies).

Concerning mine map, it is definitely an hard map but not the worst in my opinion. Usually, I let 3 soldiers on the surface to use IR gogles and hope they find hidden aliens. Then, I try to approach with cannon fodders and to use a plasma blade on them.

The worst mission for me is the map in a bunker. There are many rooms, aliens just wander there for ages and it takes so much time to search that I usually get fed up and split my soldiers to try to find them. And it is not rare that I find 1 or 2 ortnock or sheevar that kills my soldier.
I stopped my last game on this map after more or less 100 missions because I was tired of it and I knew the game was already more or less won (as I had researched everything and nations were pretty happy).

Yes, that's why I said I don't take them down ^^

For the very same reason, I would prefer to not use smoke grenades so much but the game is just not playable without for me.

I also prefer long range fights because aliens have much more TU than your soldiers and you are likely to have losses (and you won't be able to choose which soldier to expose) on close combat.

Also note that the game inproved a lot between 2.4 (first version I tried) and 2.6. The UI has changed and it will take you some time to get used to it. But you should definitely move to the latest dev version (even if your save game won't work).

Well, I just realized that I forgot to tell that I don't attack flying ufos (as I don't want to lure them into cannons as it is as exploit of a bug IMHO). Because of that, when the last kind of UFO comes (cannon something), they are so fast and well armed that they will shoot anything near.
Note that if you never got shot, you should try as it opens new rescue missions where you have to fight to retrieve your soldiers ^^

In my opinion, this game is just not playable without using smoke grenades. First, you sometimes start in such bad position that you are sure to get a reaction fire even if you only move and don't fire. Moreover, your soldiers will be exposed most of the time and you will not have the ability to show only 1 cannon fodder to get shot and see where aliens are.
Last (but not least), you will move so slowly from a not too exposed site to another that you are sure that no civilian survives.

From my experience, I would say that if you don't want to use smoke, there is no way you an win (at least on high difficulty levels - I never tried easy or very easy).

As far as I know, alien crews are random so you may have just been lucky (or not) to not deal with sheevar yet.

Concerning your version, you can see it in the main screen in the bottom left (it should be something like UFO: ALien Invasion 2.6 ... Jan 23 2016) => The version (2.5 or 2.6) is important and if you are playing a dev snapshot, the date should help.

Concerning the differences between version, I know that when difficulty increases, nations are more demanding (they will require you to save civilians during missions and they will not tolerate their happiness to get too slow).
On the soldier side, you have more soldiers to recruit at game start and I think you get more each month.
In battles, the aliens are weaker on low difficulty levels.
I don't know how difficulty changes UFO spawning (if it does).
