Discussion / change the viewpoint vs change the camera angle
« on: May 14, 2017, 11:10:09 pm »
I have played this game a while, and I change the viewpoint by zooming in and 'flying' over the battle-scape.

But I saw some tutorials and these have much more control over the camera angle. In particular you can reverse the viewpoint and look from the other side. Very useful when looking for doorways and ramps in a dark scene.

It this part of the game itself? If so, how do the change the camera angle?

Discussion / Alien Panic?
« on: May 13, 2017, 10:43:53 pm »
In a battlescape (playing 2,5), I sometimes get a message like "Xarg whatever has panicked" - I assume this is an alien.

This seems to have no effect on what is going on.

Is this for a future feature?

Discussion / setting up a target, green or red
« on: May 13, 2017, 10:35:15 pm »
When you are setting up a target, you get a green or red direction line.

If it is green, can you be 100% certain you will not hit your own men? (Of course this could happen with grenades etc, but what about normal shots?)

If it is red but you have a non-zero success score (implying that you are punching a hole in something before reaching the target), do you ever go ahead and fire?

Discussion / Research: focused or spread out?
« on: May 09, 2017, 10:07:05 am »
...
3) Outside of battles, always make sure u research as much stuff as u can, upgrading the space to accomodate more scientists, and put all scientists onto the most immediate project. Focused research always is better than multiple research. Trust me on this one.
...

Somewhere I read the opposite, that research was more efficient if spread out over 3 or more areas.

Which is best?

Discussion / what difficulty level do I have?
« on: May 01, 2017, 12:35:49 pm »
How can I tell what difficulty level I chose when I started? That was some time ago.

I want to check in the middle of a game.

Discussion / I cannot produce Rifle Particle Accelerators
« on: May 01, 2017, 11:47:24 am »
I cannot produce Rifle Particle Accelerators. They do not appear on the build list.

I can build the Particle Beam Rifle.

I do not know if this is a bug or not.

Did I misunderstand something?

I have a strange green world map when I load a saved file after starting.

The world is green, not an even green, but a mottled green.. There are no country boundaries. You can just see all the other feature, e.g. city lights where it is dark.

If I reload an earlier saved game, same problem.

But I have found a workaround. I just restart the game completely (not from a saved game) and the world map is OK. Then I restart again and load the game I wanted in the first place, and all is OK.

Discussion / 24 hour "delivery" delay for soldiers?
« on: October 29, 2013, 07:41:09 pm »
Many aspects of the game are hard and unrealistic (I mean Return Fire) but one seems unfairly easy.

When you see a Harvester heading straight at your base, you can quickly hire a bunch of rookies and buy some weapons too. Maybe buying weapons for immediate use is OK, but it seems unfair (to the aliens, but when were they fair to us you may ask) to get rookies and have then fighting for you 1 hour later.

How about a 24 hour "delivery" delay for soldiers? Maybe for all employees?

Crashed in battle scenario. Apparently looping with 'please wait' in red on the screen. I have seen this before, but after 5 minutes the game usually restarts. This time I waited 10+ minutes then gave up. It was in an attack on my base. I just had 1 rookie left and I had just seen a brief message saying something like 'x is feeling very shaky'. So would I if I was the last one left alive!

UFOAI Version : 2.5 IA-32, stable version, dated around 25 Sept

Is the bug reproducible? Doubtful

I am having problems with this news item:

 Important savegame update
We have just made a change to the directory where save games are stored. If you want to continue to use your 2.5-dev savegames with the latest version from git or the nightly installers, you must copy them manually to the new location. Otherwise the game will be unable to find them. The path depends on your operating system and is written in our FAQ.
Files that end in .savx need to be placed in a new subdirectory called campaign. Files that end in .mpt need to be placed in a new subfolder called multiplayer (for multiplayer teams) or skirmish (for skirmish teams). If these new directories do not exist, just create them.
For example, on Windows you will find the files in \Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\UFOAI\2.5-dev\. You must create the folder campaign at \Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\UFOAI\2.5-dev\campaign\ and move the save files there.

I already have a directory structure:
...\UFOAI\2.5-dev\base\save\campaign\
does this mean I now need:
...\UFOAI\2.5-dev\campaign\base\save\campaign\
or
...\UFOAI\2.5-dev\campaign\save\campaign\
or
...\UFOAI\2.5-dev\campaign\campaign\
or
...\UFOAI\2.5-dev\campaign\

Discussion / Notes from veteren XCOM player after his first UFOAI game
« on: September 12, 2013, 07:32:55 pm »
Having moved over to Ubuntu, I was pleased to find an open source version of one of my favourite old games. I started with the simple scenario, normal difficulty and with the official 2.4 release.

I soon got that old feeling and greatly enjoyed the start of the game.

But after a while some small niggles appeared

- there were a couple of game freezes, KB and mouse dead, when I was in the battleground, both after I clicked for my next move. I am happy to provide logs, but which ones? (Excuse me if this is elsewhere on the site, I have not found i yet)
- I got to August and suddenly all research projects dried up. My scientists got very bored doing nothing.
- I fought about 50 battles, more than 40 were the same one, with a Harvester landing in an African village. (Most of these were triggered at midnight, so I also fought them in the dark, which was hard with the sun shining through my window). Since I had bases and radars scattered over the globe, I would have expected the aliens to be landing elsewhere than mostly Africa, in my case somewhere need Cairo.
- I got the impression that this simple scenario had just dried up, and had finished without a proper finale. Does anything else happen? Do UFOs appear? Do research projects appear? I can imagine that it s just a simple training scenario, but this needs to be in the description.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great game. The developers must be proud of what they have achieved. This should be in the Ubuntu software Center. If it gets there, you will have a flood of new players.

Many thanks for this great game.
