Translating / Testing your translations
« on: February 01, 2013, 10:27:27 pm »
There is an important thing to consider when you're testing the translation. Some of you might have the stable game installed (e.g. using apt-get, urpmi, yum or the like) while testing the development version, from git. (I have this kind of setup)

Make sure you compile manually using
Code: [Select]
./configure && make If not, the development version might use the installed translation in /usr and not your updated translation from the development version.

Translating / Email notification on pot file updates
« on: July 29, 2012, 06:05:05 am »
Is it possible to receive an email whenever the pot file changes?
I don't mind having to subscribe somewhere, as long as I get a notice on Email that the pot file is updated. I need email notification as I rarely visit forums when I don't need help or are looking for a specific resolution.

Linux / UFO: Alien Invasion is included in Mandriva 2011
« on: September 04, 2011, 09:08:24 am »
Now that Mandriva 2011 is released, I thought I should tell you that they have included ufoai v2.3.1 in the release. This means that you can install the game by "urpmi ufoai" in a root-console or by searching for ufoai in the Package manager, which you can find in the Mandriva Control Panel. ("mcc" in a console)

You might need to add repositories from the internet to find it, as it is to big to ship on the DVDs and ISOs.
See EasyUrpmi for help on adding a repository.

Translating / Important tip for translators who use Google Translate
« on: September 03, 2011, 12:52:39 pm »
For those of you who do translating using Google Translate to help you, there is one important aspect to consider.

If you just do a copy and paste, the translation is almost always wrong on important places. Google Translate is extremely poor on grammar. Many English words have multiple meanings, and Google translate seems to always pick the first available word it finds, despite of it often is wrong in many contexts.

To summarize: Google Translate is a tool to help translation, but you need to manually check the suggested translation and correct it. Do Not depend on it.

I am one of the maintainers of the Mandriva ufoai packages, and have discovered a problem with the latest stable, version 2.3.1. We have among others a patch that removes the Makefile.in-code that create the ufo.sh script, due to a few Mandriva policies regarding installed packages. One other reason being the shell script doesn't work if one does Not have the source dir, which those who install just the rpm's don't have anyway.. ;-)

When one starts the game, after having run make, make install etc. and does NOT run the game from the game directory (~/.ufoai/2.3.1/) or the source directory (eg: ~/download/games/ufoai-2.3.1-source/) or even remove the source directory after installin, the translation files are Not loaded. Not even the english translation is loaded. This results in NO text information on any items of any kind, like in-game e-mails, ufopedia, buy-sell screen etc. See screenshots.

However if the game is launched using this command "ufo +set fs_i18ndir /usr/share/locale" everything loads fine.
Meaning, the game does not honour the configure flag "--localedir=/usr/share/locale". It should be noted however that the language files do install into the correct directory. The game just seems to ignore them unless the above mentioned command line switch is used.

This is a huge anoyance for anyone who install the game using "make install" and needs to be fixed.
Relying on a shell script to cd into the game directory is not the correct way to do this, as it breaks packaging.

I have also submitted this to the bugtracker.

Sounds and Music / Thank you for exellent music
« on: May 10, 2011, 06:05:54 pm »
I just wantet to tell the artists who created music for this game that they have done a good job.

I especially like the van_geoscape and van_theme tracks, as it reminds me of the music in X-Com Enemy Unknown. I have the tracks from Enemy Unknown as MP3 and play them often. Some of the tracks from UFO:AI might find it's way to my playlists soon. :)

So I wish to bring a big thank you to the various artists who have created the music. It is greatly appreciated. :)

Feature Requests / Convoy mission idea.
« on: July 15, 2010, 06:34:40 pm »
I have been playing 2.2 and 2.2.1 for a while and I'm about to attempt a compile of 2.3. So these things may have changed. But somehow I don't think so. :)

I have always thought it sounds weird that millitary personell one encounters on convoy missions are unarmed. They are the Army, are they not? Then they should be armed and at least try to defend them selves.

Also, I find it a little funny that uniformed army personell are refered to as civilians. :D

Just a few ideas I have.
