Tactics / Use of flamethrower
« on: May 21, 2007, 06:51:55 pm »
I've found one tactic that make the flamethrower quite effective despite its not-so-short range : indoor reaction fire (flamethrowers rule indoor anyway !).

Give a flamethrower to a FAST trooper, set his/her reaction fire to multiple shots, place him/her along  wall, one square away from a door, facing it, and end turn.

If an enemy goes through the door, your flamer will most probably turn it to a crisp in one shot or two. If not, however, he'll be in trouble, so give him the heaviest armor you have.

Of course, this method also works with other weapons (SMG anyone ?) and does not take advantage of the length of the flame, as only one enemy can cross the door at a time.
But so far, that's the best and most frequent use of my flamethrower soldier. :)

Any other flamethrower tactic ?

Feature Requests / More or better fire modes
« on: May 16, 2007, 08:55:13 am »
Hi everyone,

Reading a thread about weapons ranges, I  wondered if some (most ?) weapons should have more fire modes.

Let me explain :
Currently, an assault rifle has 3 fire modes : single snap shot, 3-rounds burst, and autofire (20 rounds). While those fire modes make assault rifles good short/medium range weapons, they don't quite allow them to be used at longer range... as they could in real life.

For instance, an standard assault rifle practical range is 300m (about +50% if scoped), although in prone supported position aimed single shot.

So what I'm basically thinking about is "couldn't [weapon X] have an AIMED single shot fire mode" (even very costly TU-wise) ?

Discussion / Weapon suggestion : machine gun
« on: May 04, 2007, 03:54:25 pm »
Hello everyone !

As stated in my introduction post (see the "tranlastion" topic), I am deeply interested in weapons, military and tactics.

And as such, I have noticed that the already quite comprehensive UFO:AI armory lacks one major piece of equipment that has been found in every infantry formation since WW1 : a light or general purpose machine gun, comparable to the FN Minimi (M249 in the US army), M60, or WW2 german MG42 (but NOT Gatling gun !!!).

Such weapon would be capable of fast automatic fire, with a greater range and damage than the assault rifle (but not too much : they still use the same ammo in real life. +10-30% seems fine.), be belt-fed (100-250 rounds), but heavier than other shoulder weapons.

They may or may not be able to fire single shots, take more time to reload (and maybe fire as well), and, ideally, would take rather major penalities if fired while standing instead of crouching (or being prone if such feature gets in game in the future).

Skill used would of course be heavy weapons.
